All this said though when I turned on CNNI this morning I was surprised to a) See an International bulletin and b) It wasn't leading on Trump but instead the news about Tottenham appointing Mourinho.

Because Tottenham appointing Mourinho is such a significant international story . Wink

Of course, CNN shouldn't ignore major international stories -- such as events in Hong Kong --, but the impeachment proceedings are truly historic. Their outcome will have repercussions on a global scale, and because other international news channels are not providing live coverage, I believe that CNN International made the right decision to carry the hearings in full.

As for an over-reliance on CNN Domestic simulcasts, I think you have a point.

Hehe. Notice I didn't say that should be leading the news either.
Though you could argue given the worldwide many viewers would be more interested in it than some ambassador 95% would never have heard of until the impeachment hearings (certainly the Mourinho story was the one that caught my attention this morning - mostly because I'm quite into sport).

Airing the impeachment hearings in full I can understand to be honest - when it's just airing talking heads/build up/post-hearings analysis is when I have the issue (especially as CNNI simulcasts much of domestic primetime as is). CNNI when it produces coverage gets the balance about right I feel of U.S and international news - they've been very good on the Bolivia and Hong Kong stories recently.

Also, maybe a controversial view but I'm not sure how much Americans really care about Trump scandals - especially if you look at how his support still holds up. There is maybe the 'Washington bubble' effect much like there's the 'Westminster Bubble' effect here. While news channels may get excited I'm not sure Joe Bloggs cares so much,

Anyway, I've gone massively off-topic here from originally talking about the election coverage and debate so apologies and as all you all were.

Have to say I was very impressed with Nina Hossain's interviews with the leaders of the smaller parties on ITV.

Probably some of the best TV interviews I've seen during the campaign. Mainly because she let the leaders answer the questions and let the viewers decide the outcome rather than it all becoming a tit for tat mud slinging session!

A potentially serious press reporting issue has developed tonight with the Conservatives barring access to Mirror Group titles from their 'Battle Bus'. Some talk of retalliation is in the works too. It makes me wonder with Channel 4's run ins, whether this type of reactive behaviour and response might in the coming days extend to Broadcast Journalism too. We'll see.

(Hopefully this doesn't fall foul of the Posting in political topics guidance - if it does pull it off the board)

It’s clearly has implications for broadcasting and the media in general so it’s all relevant.

Nina is one of the most underrated broadcasters around IMO - a consistently reliable performer.

Far too many interviewers either think they are Paxman, or want to make a name for themselves by asking something where any answer would be awkward and then not dropping it.

Of course those interviews are the ones that gain traction because the other side of the argument love them and retweet them again and again.

Clare Balding, Matt Forde and Robert Rinder will also be appearing on Channel 4's Alternative Election Night.

Quote:
Channel 4 Commissions Alternative Election Night

Throughout the night Krishnan, Katherine and Rylan will be joined by an eclectic mix of the country’s biggest political figures and sharpest comedic talent to tell the dramatic story as it unfolds, with top-class analysis and some much-needed laughs.

Clare Balding will have the results as they happen, Matt Forde will run the Alternative News Desk and the inimitable Rob Rinder will be out and about assessing the mood on the ground.

Also In the studio will be exclusive heavyweight political guests including ex-Home Secretary Amber Rudd and former Labour Deputy Leader Tom Watson, who will give their take on developments along with a host of comedians including Sophie Willan and Tez Ilyas, candidates and political bigwigs.

Channel 4 News Political Editor Gary Gibbon will have all the breaking news and detailed analysis. And a team of correspondents will be stationed at the most important counts to assess exactly what’s going on up and down the country, as the worlds of politics and comedy come together for what is set to be one of the most explosive and momentous nights in our modern history.

Somehow they've managed to make it sound even less watchable than it already did.

Channel Four future could well pop up in the Consertives manifesto.

Sorry if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but the “Ask the Leaders” programme on BBC One had a version of Arthur which ended with David Lowe-esque beeps. Is this a new thing? Are the BBC ditching the 2010 music (which I quite like)?
