I wonder whether all the other parties will complain about Newsnight because they are clearly for the Lib Dems right? Such a joke all these complaints. Get on with it!

Just look at all the orange here.

All the parties are ridiculous.

That election logo is so much nicer than the one that BBC News have used for the last few elections.

I see it as a great callback to an old one

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think only the national news bulletins are 'protected' from being opted out of.

So is there a legal argument for the SNP if STV dropped the Johnson v Corbyn debate to hold a Scottish leaders one?

Pedantically it's the other way round, apart from the national news (and ITV Breakfast franchise) it's entirely up to STV if they want to *opt in* to a network offering.

Regarding the debates could ITV or whomever say it’s available to whatever party meets a certain threshold in current polls (I don’t know if the UK does that). But that’s how the US networks generally determine who competes either with polling and or a fundraising threshold.

They've set the threshold at parties who could realistically form a government. The complication with the Lib Dems is they can get close in percentage terms but due to our first past the post system are usually a long way behind when it comes to number of seats. Back in 2017 though Labour and the Conservatives squeezed them out completely.

I do think ITV and the BBC have both gone for the sensible option of a head to head debate between the two potential Prime Ministers and a wider debate among the 7 parties who could influence the result.

Part of the problem is "former BBC producers" getting lots of retweets for saying "it doesn't work like that" about the explanation, who apparently last worked there when you had to write to the archive in triplicate a week in advance for them to dust off a can of 16mm for you.

Here's an article that puts it into proper perspective
