As for Vine being hired, well I told someone I know who watches this morning show now and then and she was horrified by it. I have to say I find the choice to be very safe and pedestrian to the point of it being a case of hiring yet another face from the old boys network.

He's certainly safer than Matthew Wright. But I can see why they went for him being a safe pair of hands to transition from a presenter who has owned Channel 5 mid-mornings for the last 18 years.

I suspect 5 were always going to go for a name to replace Wright, they've been trying to build the channel's reputation and having someone like Jeremy Vine only helps than hinders. I wouldn't be surprised if they do an ad campaign for the new show

If I had ( and I often do !) employed a contract worker, on an agreement to provide a service to me, for a fixed term and price, and mid way through the term he tells me he has signed up to provide services to someone else, and could I adjust slightly my scope of works to allow him to fulfil the other engagement with more ease ( for him) I think I’d be a bit narked.

What would happen if you were also discussing reducing the pay of said contractor? (I have no idea if this is the case - but other high profile presenters have taken cuts recently)

I’m not surprised Matthew Bannister refused to give Chris Evans Fridays off, because of TFI

Though ironically - Radio 1 have decided to do just what Chris wanted now - as they are planning for Friday to be part of the weekend schedule, and the weekday Breakfast show to be Mon-Thu...

Yes, I’ve read that somewhere recently. If these sort of things are part of a revised or new bi directional contract then fine. In fact the more I think about, the more that might be happening with JV. Cutting out editorial input to the show ( currently I think he arrives at R2 at 8am ish ?) and cutting out the 11:30 teaser with Ken Bruce

There was a catalogue of bad behaviour which led up to that though. I'm sure Jeremy is likable enough at the corporation for some concessions to be made.

Steve Wright is one of those radio jocks that was never meant for front of camera transition, even on Top Of The Pops he looks geeky, weird and awkward and not natural. I'm sure he was tried on some BBC1 show in early evening way back long ago. I have a vague memory of it but no more. Best left unseen and just heard on radio.

You mean 'Steve Wright's People Show'.

No full episodes are out there just clips of the star interviews..
Exhibit A

Note, a staircase and a water feature, which must have been the inspiration for that other chat show titan of the time.. Err Alan Partridge.

Pace and presentation was all over the place, tried to be a Letterman clone, without appearing to be a Letterman clone. Threw too many under thought out ideas at the viewers, and hoped they stuck.
Markymark and Spencer gave kudos

Short of giving the thing to Richard Madeley for the sheer Alan Partridge potential, I'm struggling to think of a better option than Jeremy Vine.

His Radio 2 show is populist and he makes big play of the fact he listens to people beyond the usual experts and pundits you'd get on the TV and radio. He has to maintain audience figures on a radio station which most people tune into for music and chat and seems to do well with that.

I'm not sure how his style will transition on to Channel 5, but we can only wait and see.

Does R2 still go into the news at the TOTH? I guess they could extend the bulletin slightly, and perhaps go straight into a song which should give him another 8 minutes, starting his show after 12?

Why would the Beeb make any concessions for a problem not of their making ?

On the back of this (I'm not too sure how it works exactly), but is Jeremy Vine employed by the BBC, or is he in a contract through his agent to supply work (whether it's for 1 month or 10 years)?

If it's the former, I understand your point. However as AlexS said, with wanting him to take a pay cut I guess the cards are in his hands. He's a popular presenter and would be snapped up by anyone. Looks as though Channel 5 are trying already.

Does he take a paycut from the BBC with no leniency for other work commitments, or move to another channel that will pay generously for him, and give him the opportunity to pursue other things?

Perhaps Simon Mayo ? The current relaunched car crash of the drivetime show (no pun intended) with Jo Willey is unsustainable
