Many don't like the 'new' graphics for BBC News, others think C4's white titles are dating and others hated the teal graphics for ITV. But over the last decade or two, what's the worst you've seen? Graphics, sets, astons, dogs, titles, beds, stings etc.
If anyone thinks this thread is a waste of time then I'm sorry - genuinely interested.
As far as the UK is concerned, five used to have a pretty ordinary one, so did many of the BBC regional news programs (Reporting Scotland springs to mind).
Channel Nine Perth has to have the worst on screen graphics in Aust.
The Channel Nine Melbourne key (the first cap) would look great if it was on a BBC News news wall, at least thats the effect i think they are trying to have with having a corner in the key and showing so much of the floor.
Some of the ITVplc regions' "compromise" sets used at the initial launch of the generic look in Feb 2004, left a lot to be desired. Especially as Meridian's all still had elements of the sun/moon/face logo on the front of the desk.
And Anglia West's CSO set never looked particularly good, regardless of each different "new look" for the programme. Whatever else you may think about the ITV generic regional news look, at least Anglia West
finally
got a physically real set.
I despised the cyan astons of the original BBC generic English Regions circa 2000 too.
And the sheer number of years that all ITV news output was in "pretend widescreen"/"14:9 zoomed-and-cropped" type format was cringeworthy.
I seem to remember that during HTV (West) News' final ever pre-generic look, the "pretend widescreen" looked particularly sh*t during the opening wideshot.
The opening wideshot was as if viewed through an oval "window" in a dark blue background (all of which was actually overlaid graphics, of course), the perimeter of the "oval hole" being a sort of golden colour IIRC.
The curved golden lines spilled over
a bit
into the thin black vertical areas at the far left/right, yet not to the absolute edges of the full 16:9 frame. But none of the dark blue background at the very perimeter of the picture ("around the hole") did, IIRC. It just looked clumsy.

Indeed so, Granada's looked terrible, they only revamped the whole programme about five months before the 2004 relaunch and that was poor. From the previous look they had a nice looking set, a couple of plasmas and the background being a light blue montage of places in the North West. This was all chucked out in favour of 3 giant screens on an orangey curtain, come Feb 04 the curtain became bright yellow and the screens went a strong colour of blue, it looked awful. It became a big relief when they introduced the ITV set a year later, give me a view of Manchester anyday.
The final non-corporate Calendar set was pretty nightmarish with lots of really bright orangey-red and royal blue, plus the desk which looked like a Tupperware box. It actually looked a bit better when given the yellow and blue treatment.
Currently, I think you have to go a long way to find a set less appealing than Look North (Leeds). It's just hideously cramped, and those illuminated panels on the walls look so fussy and cluttered. It's improved slightly since the recent revamp, but there's only so much you can polish a turd.
Reporting Scotland's set for sheer levels of boringness... Even when they moved to Pacific Quay it's just a desk in a studio. And again, even with the rebrand ( ie nothing happened ) it is still less interesting than the other nations or regions, some of whom have made an effort at least.
