Watched the programme properly today...it's a very good programme, but at the same, just does not fill the slot that was Working Lunch. George Alagiah isn't the best host either...but why not show half an hour of BBC World News later in the afternoon...say 3/4ish...no news prog is on then, would give a good afternoon alternative to the bog standard daytime tv...

If The Hub were on at that time I think that would make a good addition to the BBC Two schedule.

I think GMT caters for mainly European news, which is more relevant. The Hub serves the Asian audience, making the news far less interesting for the viewer.

I thought GMT was originally aimed at North America? At least the programme it replaced - World News Today with George Alagiah - was when it launched. It acted as their breakfast programme. I may be out of date, but as far as I was aware, the only European-orientated programming was The World Today (06:00-09:00 CET) and World News Today with Zeinab Badawi (originally BBC4/The World).

Could someone explain what happens from BBC World News viewers POV, does the program start twice, once at the TOTH and again at the :30 mark? And does BBC World News have enough time for a weather forecast before the next bulletin at 1pm British time? And is there a break in the show and if so what fills it on BBC Two?

All our flagship programmes have now been divided into three x 30 minute editions, back to back. (Impact Asia / The Hub / GMT / WNTZB / WNTLD). Previously, they were structured as one hour editions with headlines at the bottom of the hour, followed by a shorter second edition of only 30minutes at the top of the next hour. I guess to suit various opting audiences, the 3 x 30mins scenario gives a greater deal of flexibility.

The bottom of the hour onwards is still structured though in the same way as the second half of the full segment used to be, I.e. with business and sports islands in between.

There is some shortening of the editions on a Friday, when Weekend World replaces on edition of the Hub, and World News replaces the second edition of Zeinab.

When I saw it on BBC iplayer the other day the Business with Aaron seemed to be the break filler for the british audience, you can always tell as there is a coming up sequence followed by a couple of minutes of news and then the headlines, with the coming up and headlines bookending the adverts for BBC World News viewers.

I don't want to sound heretical... but does anyone else think George is just a bit rubbish? He's not too bad on the Six O'clock News but when he has to interview or adlib, he just seems a bit lost, a bit hesitant, a bit out of his depth. Don't get me wrong, he's an excellent correspondent but I can help thinking Emperor's New Clothes. Or perhaps Emperor's News Clothes.

I think GMT has a dual purpose initially, as a morning programme for viewers and the us and primetime news for here in East Asia... The Hub is for South Asians.

btw... can anybody record GMT for us international forumers to see? Smile

Breakfast News
There was an ad for it on BBC One straight after Breakfast this morning...ended with the BBC Two endboard, complete with BBC World News logo next to the BBC Two logo....
