Q. Sonia Deol ? ( ex BBC Breakfast stand in about 5 years ago, day job BBC Asian Network )

A. Vancouver local telly. OK I've cheated coz I'm there now, and saw her the other night. Had to Google to be sure, she's been 'North Americanised', big hair do, shoulder pads, and peak white teeth, and of course an obsession with throwing to someone in a helicopter six times an hour, but it's good old Sonnie from Brum.

I was going to say that's quite a fall and how the hell did she end up there. But according to Wikipedia she's also a Canadian citizen. As for your generalization for being North Americanized I'd say you summed up female journalists for 3.5 out of the 4 traits you mentioned. Everything but the shoulder pads is true - the only time I see them is when a woman's wearing a jacket.

And your lucky they tossed to the helicopter six times an hour - some stations do it during every traffic report which can be twice every ten minutes.

I must say both CTV and Global Vancouver stations news shows are a good mix of local, national, and international news. Proper international news too, German elections, the UK US trade dispute involving Bombardier, and the ethnic cleansing in Myanmar.

Both have helicopters, used for traffic reports, though 75% of the report is taken up with the reporter reading out a sponsorship announcement.

CBC don't seem to have any local programme beyond a webcam based effort from inside their Vancouver radio studio ?

You're talking about the Early Edition simulcast between 6am and 7am. CBC TV used to show CBC News Network in that hour, now they simulcast the local breakfast show between 6am and 7am local time, whilst the radio versions go on until 8.30, and in some cases start at 5am.

CBC Vancouver also do news from 5.59pm until 7pm, and 11pm until 11.30. Some regions only do a 30 minute equivalent slot at 5.59, whilst others do the full hour.
