Trying to catch up with what I don't know. I remember years ago watching breakfast news on BBC One and Justin Webb was one of the main presenters - is he still working with the BBC or has he fled to a digital station?
Further to all the previous information given, Justin Webb was co-presenting this morning's Today Programme on BBC Radio Four from Pensacola on the Gulf Coast of the United States.
IIRC, Justin also did the One and the Six frequently during the "cut glass" visual era, just about the time that Huw Edwards was progressing more into newscasting, as opposed to political reporting.
Back to your original question, I would like also to throw it open to the undernoted anchors /presenters, who have all but disappeared from our screens without trace:
BBC TELEVISION NEWS
Mike Smartt
Frances Coverdale
Debbie Thrower
ITN
Julia Somerville
Carol Barnes
Richard Bath
Denis Tuohy
David Cass*
CNN
Marina Kolbe
Anand Naidoo**
* was out here in Dubai for the last couple of years presenting for a local TV Channel. Haven't seen him for a while though.
** saw him back on CNNI last week after a long absence. He is no longer listed on the CNN website as a presenter or reporter.
If anyone has any "gen" on the whereabouts of any of the above long, gone faces, I would appreciate knowing.
Presented a few shows on the ITV News Channel last summer (2004). Runs a media training company with some other former ITN colleagues.
Wasn't she caught speeding, or something simular? Can't say she'll be missed.
Yes, that's right. It was soon after the death of her daughter in Australia (Clare was a former colleague of mine), and led to her being disqualified as a magistrate.
FWIW, I actually used to like Carol Barnes. Her plummy accent wasn't such a big hit North of the Border. However, she was an excellent newscaster.
I recall one night she was doing News at Ten alonsgide Sandy Gall. She had a very sore throat, and had to give up doing any stories. Sandy did the entire bulletin, except the second story, first story after the break and the headlines before the "and finally....." slot, which Sandy also did.
Bringing back the memories indeed. Saxon Baines anyone? Whatever happened to Nick Clarke from the Business Breakfast news in the ninties. Oh and Julia Somerville - a legend in her own rights.
