As far as radio is concerned, there used to be an 'obit alarm' which would fire when someone died, however it was prone to be faulty and would go off on a regular basis (at least it did at Beacon in Wolverhampton!!).

except someone pressed the "wrong button" at IRN and the alarm didn't go off when the Queen Mum died. Oops.

My point is if someone really significant died, would it now be Huw who would announce it on the Beeb, or would it be whoever is available?

They'll always go for a familiar face, (i.e. a newsreader that is known to BBC1 viewers) if possible... but of course they wouldn't wait for a while to wait for someone to come in to work

Of course sometimes you can see it coming, as with the Queen Mother, although ironically (as mentioned above) when it happened it was at one of the worst times for broadcasters. A number of stations were automated (including the now-demised Student Broadcast Network which came out of the 6pm IRN news with some hard rock!) and this is still an unresolved issue in many stations.

I was listening to various stations the night Diana died (i was working a nightshift), one particular station had problems because the IRN bulletins were extended to 3 minutes (there's a clip of the IRN announcement to stations on the MHP page). But the automation was still expecting a 2 minuter, meaning that the end was cut off.

It is possible for station automation to be dialled into and changed from home, but it does rely on a member of staff being woken up to do it

Well, ITV switch to ITV News Channe......er, ITV Play and have a panicky search through the basement for their copy of "Royal Deaths From Hell".

Channel 4 launch a 24-hour a day coverage (using also E4 renamed Royal E4) during which viewers are invited to phone in and vote for the next person they'd also like to see leave the royal family.

The BBC broadcast "The Royle Family" with black edging.

Sky show a cute female newsreader mis-pronouncing Elizabeth.

CNN broadcast Brian Sewell's response, using subtitles.

What is 'five'?

Rob.

However, don't expect five to do anything. They are usually poor at that, IMO. When Princess Diana died, they carried on showing game shows and other things until the morning, from what I heard.

They did thoughout the night, but then the death wasn't announced until about 5am. Also it was only a few months old, it's a diffrent and more experienced channel now, it also has access to a rolling news channel

BBC 1 carried BBC World until Martin Lewis began at 6am.

ITV News ran from about 4.40 IIRC with Dermot Murnaghan and Nicholas Owen

Yep, and those were the days of closedowns, remember. That is something extraordinary unto itself.

Crikey BBC2 had to wait a long time didnt they!
Was there any reason why BBC1 couldn't cut out of Dazzling Bloomers a bit earlier?

I love that long slow fade to black - how distinguished. Its nature is also such as to indicate to the viewer that this is not a technical error, but a deliberate intervention.
A BBC classic.
