Some of the regional BBC weather forecasters got some national exposure this morning on Breakfast as part of a feature on the how the heatwave was affecting various parts of the country.

First off was a freaky, toothy bloke with a moustache in Scotland (Peter something?), who handed not so ably over to " Shefia in Lond... er... Birmingham".

Shefali Oza was next, followed by Jim Bacon in somewhere East, which I'm sure provided a blast from the past for a lot of people elswehere in the country who won't have seen him since the fuzzy-felt national forecast days.

Was this from the regional studios or from OBs?

OBs... although in the case of Shefali, she was just on the balcony at the Mailbox overlooking the canals. I'm not sure if sticking a wire out of the window really constitutes an OB. Wink

Do all the ITV regions now show the UV Sun care forecast at the start of the programme rather than with the weather at the end, or is it just Calendar?

I think it's just YTV. I haven't seen any of the other regions show it until the regular forecasts.

Is it just me or have the BBC Weather graphics got much smoother like as if they got a better graphics card or something? Its especially noticable when the white info panels slide up and down into view at the start and when the names of different cities slide in from the right.

I noticed that last night, and at first thought I was imagining things. The motion seemed a lot more fluid and less jerky. This morning on Breakfast however, it was back to it's normal judderiness.

My initial thought, which is pure speculation, and probably wrong, is maybe the weather is going HD, and the graphics have had to be improved accordingly.

I saw the improved framerate for the first time tonight. It certainly makes a world of difference.

I don't think it's anything to do with HD - in fact, this change only now brings the quality up to the standard we really should expect for SD!

Remember how the TOG graphics on News 24 had that annoying NTSC-like shimmering for the first few months (as if it was being standards converted) but was then brought up to 50fps after a few months?

Maybe only a certain number of the PCs in the BBC Weather Centre have the necessary power or graphics cards to run at 50fps and so you may still get 25fps on some forecasts. Perhaps the powers the be are waiting to see whether viewers notice the difference before paying another £100 or so for another new graphics card.

If only they would make the country green again too Laughing

Sian Lloyd on ITV weather on Friday night: "And remember: don't leave your dog in the car."

Don't know why, but it really made me laugh.

Maybe Sian has been picking up tips from Dan Corbett....

"Nice day for a BBQ"
"Nice evening if you are going for a picnic or taking your doggie out"

Yes, probably - but she just doesn't have Dan's inimitable style. She made it sound like an out-take from that Baz Luhrman Sunscreen song from a few years ago.
