If you want to see the new BBC Weather graphics in action then if you have access to BBC Television Centre, maybe by going on a tour, you will occasionally see them practice with the new graphics.

In the corridor along the Weather Centre there is a screan with 4 feeds from the weather studios and today i happened to pass along and see a weather forcast done with very different graphics, i presume they are the new ones.

I can say, they are very different, at least during the complete forecast I saw. It looks like a more 3D version of the Sky News weather, quite dark, the temperatures are in square boxes, the weather changes by hour like on Sky News even for the next few days. Didnt see a colour coded map of the temperatures but just a dark green one with the numbers in boxes all over, and their shade varies with temperature more than with today's graphics. Lots of animation. A bit like being in Microsoft flight simulator.

If this is what they are planning to launch then i dont like it... it's a bit dull, dark blue sea and no sunshine symbols. Lets hope it's more than what i saw!

Ahh. Thanks for that.
Someone mentioned that there would be a greater 3D element to the new package. This is the first time I've heard of the squares been used....

The whole forecast was based on a 3D map, even the non fly through bits, similar to the day time summary forecast today. I am just saying what I saw being done from a weather studio today, I saw squares..

It all looked a bit too 'computery' to me and less like good graphics. Day and time are places in two round edged squares in the bottom right, no bar across the bottom anymore.

They were using the old graphics last Monday.

What do you mean, and where?

I am guessing they rehearse the forcasts with the new graphics itnernally in between doing the propper graphics for broadcast using the current graphics (I just saw a rehearsal on the studio feed in the corridor of the weather centre. I may have been lucky to see them using them there... any idea when they are launching them? Must be soon..

There has been some, Unconfirmed, rumours of a post-election launch. However I would keep an open mind as let not forget it appears Nations/Regions will be receiving the new package.
It's shaping up to sound rather good. Wonder if Gills Sans will survive?

P.S. For those interested, Ive just received the NN email with those all important numbers

Just an observation... when I was at TVC last Monday there were no signs of the new graphics at all in the weather dept. Sorry if that was a bit misleading.

Paxman's tone last night suggested he expected defeat in tonight's result. His weather forcast was still brilliant- "It's April- what do you expect".

I fear people are voting weather to see Paxman's comedy routine every night.

Well ahead of the official annoucement, Paxman spills the beans.

Jeremy Paxman posted:

So farewell then, weather forecasts. Newsnight's brief flirtation is over. From Monday, it's back to the dreary old markets.
A viewers' vote has concluded conclusively. As the Labour pugilist Stephen Pound would put it, "The people have spoken... The *******."
So, from next week, Newsnight reverts to ending its summary of the news with the ten seconds of ineffable tedium that is The Markets.

Right, well I'll look forward (with, I must admit, a little trepidation) to that date. I just hope the new graphics are up to the job - the current ones are so clear, I just hope they don't ruin it.

The next question is which presenter is going to "launch" the new graphics, and present the first weather forecast. Carol Kirkwood's a fair bet as they're likely to be launched during Breakfast, but of course it would be great to see Dan Corbett doing the first new-style forecast.

I agree with some of your concerns. I really hope these new graphics don't go cloud-up, if you'll excuse the pun...
Dan Corbet launched News 24 original weather and I hope he is the first with this one.
I personally can't wait to see Shelia Oza use them on Midlands Today.

Anyone got any more details on what they'll look like? I understand that squares will be used to show the temperatures...
