Heres a few caps of probably the best work from Weatherscape XT... This is from TV 3 News' weather here in New Zealand. (credit to ANC - Australasia NewCentre - www.newcentre.cjb.net for the caps)

Sorry but there are not any screenshots of cloud and rain etc. but its very good, much more realistic than BBC'S!

How are we meant to know about thunder (or rather lightning) on the BBC's weather maps? Green indicates heavy pulses of rain, we're told, but not thunder.

I've been wondering that, especially as on the website of the company that makes the software it had some example which included lightning strikes.

One thing which has been added is the use of wind arrows, and I mean the numbered circles with arrows coming off them, not the wind flow arrows.

During the past week, Paul Hudson on Look North has been commenting, "here's one of those plain brown maps again, but look there's just a bit of cloud there" as a small dark bit of brown appears. This just shows that whoever designed this never piloted it on a day with hot weather.

Has sarah wilmshurst come back yet, or is there a new presenter on?

No sign of thunder or lightening on the new maps yet. We're in for another day of heavy rain and thundery downpours tomorrow, coming up from the South West. Despite Dan Corbett's best attempts at arm flappery and pointing in much excitement, it still looked like every other bit of rain puddles that normally appear.

Alex Deakin's been wearing glasses for tonight's forecasts... is this a permanent fixture, or is he just having a contact lens problem like Fiona Bruce was supposedly having when she wore glasses last time?

Yep - how does the new system indicate fog, sleet, hail, snow, thunder and lightning etc.?

I haven't seen a lightning strike summary recently - which was useful to indicate the path of really heavy storms.

Also - has anyone noticed the appearance of wind symbols on the "round Britain whiz" tours recently? The odd thing is that they are rendered in 3D in the same way as the temperature - so are actually really counterintuitive. Rather than pointing North or South (i.e relative to the wind direction) they seem to point up and down...

I haven't seen any sun-factor stuff recently - though I'm not as keen a viewer since the relaunch. The lack of symbols and poor technical quality really annoys me.

Hate to admit it - but I watch ITV for the weather these days... (Same data from the Met Office - but presented in a clearer format)

Well yes they do seem to point oddly to precise points on the ground. Much more difficult to understand when it's moving.

I notice also that as well as the presenters having to generally faff about much more [and actively contradict what the maps show], they also get in the way a lot by having to move around as the shakycam does.

Never seen sun/pollen info on a national forecast -- quite often on a local one mind you [tide times/surf conds etc too].

On South Today Alina moves the map in quite a classy fashion to show the Tide times.
The map moves from a straight on view of the south to a 3D View looking East from Weymouth

Anyone else seen this?

I have seen one local weather presenter write "FOG" in big letters across the map. "MIST" appeared yesterday too. Dear knows how we are meant to tell the difference between the graphical representation of fog, hail and snow come the winter! The supposed glistening effect of snow will probably only be detected when we move to HD broadcasts!

Last night I saw the pressure forecast for the first time on tv. It was on the North West Tonight Forecast tho! whether it's the local computer causing the problem or just the way the new system animates, it was very very clunky and jerky as we moved through the week. Definatly not an improvement on the smooth animation of the old maps. But atleast we saw what was causing the weather!

Diannne also made some comments about being able to see lots of brown overnight as there was no cloud!

I have to say I'm getting used to the TV forecasts however the online stuff is appauling as they take ages to load and are all pixellated. It wouldn't suprise me, now that wind arrows have appeared, we start to see some symbols again!
