I don't have a problem with the new BBC Weather Graphics, they are the best the BBC have ever had. Modern at last.
Modern: perhaps.
Clear, easy to read and understand, able to get across the same level of information - I really do not think so.
It's a massive step backwards. It's the "New Coke"; the hard bits in Ricicles; the "News at When"; the Scrappy Doo...
...the 'This Morning with Twiggy and the Nolan'? I think Ben only likes it because the map looks stretched in the wrong aspect ratio.
BTW, does anyone else remember the last time the BBC introduced a 'completely new-style weather forecast'? IIRC it was only used after the 9 O' Clock News for a short time in the early 90s (or maybe late 80s).
It used a little map of the UK in the corner of the screen divided into regions. One by one, the regions would be highlighted orange, and then the weather for that region would be displayed using a series of bar graphs to show % chance of rainfall, sunshine hours, temperature, etc.. After only a few weeks it was abandoned due to complaints from the public.
I don't suppose anyone can find any caps of this system anywhere?

I think that would have been better than the current system.
The retilt of the map now means everything is too small. Obviously it's better for Scotland but surely they could zoom in a little. I have to find the Humber (which is a small line on the map now) and then guess whereabouts I am off of it.
Did anyone else notice that this morning it was going at breakneck speed? I missed half of the weather trying to see what time we were on then we got to overnight and it cut to tomorrow evening. I was pleased to see the isobars though.

Yes! I do. I wondered if anybody else recalled this. It was graphically very impressive, and again it illustrated an 'itchy fingers' mentality - i.e. "we've got this graphics system, we haven't changed it for a few years, we MUST find SOMETHING to change".
Then, as should have happened now, they realised the error of their ways.
Having said that, the alternative system you've mentioned would have been an interesting exercise to retain in "Weatherview". BTW What has happened to Weatherview now? It's crap. No pressure charts, a quarter of the length of the old Weatherview, no fly-arounds to see the weather in other countries for comparison purposes even. You'd think with this 3D fly-around that can focus on any part of the world they'd want to show this off more. And yet, even though you'd see the globe rotate and then zoom into another country using the OLD system, Weatherscape has never been used to do the same thing.
Sorry if I've missed it somewhere in the thread, but David Brain stuck on the old symbols tonight during Spotlight. Is this unique to the south west, or is it happening on all broadcasts today?
Oh bother, the one night I didn't watch Spotlight.
All I can tell you, Phil, is that Derek didn't use them on Wales Today.
Well no, but I hope you took the opportunity to set your barometer Mr Harvey nevertheless -- Derek did say it was rising.
I do hope old symbols sneak back in though -- how rebellious.
I haven't seen either of my home towns on the new maps yet, which disappoints me -- mind you at least Derek changes them daily, HTV have had the same four for months.

Had a look at the webstream on the BBC Spotlight website:
Does look good doesn't it?! I can imgaine the people of the south west have not been happy with the changes, as the weather on Spotlight is something of an institution. What with the high tide times, surf conditions and weather picture from the kids, it's always played a major part on Spotlight.
When the symbols returned, David said, something along the lines of "Here's a summary of all that" as if he knew what his audience really wanted.
