Vote NEWSNIGHT MARKETS- you know it makes sense!

On the contentious Newsnight weather issue, the threatened snap election has been called. Michael Fish has been called out of retirement to champion the cause for Weather, whilst Lord Lamont will be making the case for Markets.

Full details (including how to vote) here.

A couple of years ago Newsnight had a weather forecast at the end of the programme. So why can't the BBC do both again?

Ah...well you see the weather was there for practical reasons when all three Nations were opting out of the last 15 minutes of the programme.

At 2300 the Nations would opt for 6.30. Newsnight themselves would do a news summary of 4.30ish at that point. Once the Nations had finished their opt after precisely 6.30, they would run a timeshifted copy of the rest of Newsnight from the end of the 4.30ish duration summary. Newsnight, however would often not do 4.30. If they were over or under, the 2 min weather forecast at the end of the programme would be extended or contracted by the amount over or under the Newsnight summary had been. This meant that (in theory) at the end of the weather forecast, the Nations should have been precisely at the end of the Newsnight programme.

I never did find out who thought of this ridiculously complicated opting structure, but happily it didn't last all that long.

No, now Scotland just wreck the last half of the show by reporting on how expensive Holyrood was every single night.

Clearly the same director who does the headline opt for the six stays on for NS as they miss the start of those titles too, every single night.

I feel the same when I'm in Scotland (not at the moment)- Newsnight Scotland is a complete and utter waste of time, with the double whammy of Scottish viewers missing out on decent Newsnight England reporting.

Sadly having cable when in Scotland means that I cannot select BBC 2 England (like Sky Digital viewers can)- why can't they introduce a Newsnight Interactive to allow this option to ALL digital viewers (like the "select your region" 6 interactive service on Sky Digital before they gave all regions channel numbers). I'm fairly confident that many Scottish viewers would opt for continuity on London presentation over the Scottish alternative.

It really is piss poor - if they really must *discuss* issues, incorporate them to Reporting Scotland at 6.30 and less of the lighter stories. I would rather have Newsnight live from London talking about National and INternational issues - than the same old crap from NS. Hopefully with all this cost-cutting the Scotland opt can be axed.

That would be nicer if they discussed things in depth at 6.30 although they would need to sit down for it as the pointless strutting around just doesn't work in that set at all.

Well with Newsnight calling a snap election on Weather or Markets, I've opened a poll to gauge opinion on the board.
I'm quite interested to see the results, The poll is only open for 10 days so get voting, in which time we could possibly see the Market board return or a fixed weather update.

Give us a third choice of "Both" and it'll get my vote. I don't know why this is an issue. It's 10 seconds in a 49 minute programme.

Lord Lamont last night put the case for the return of the Market boards and tonight Micheal Fish will champion the Weather Forecast.
Let's just hope postal voting isn't an option.... Surprised

I fear Lamont may damage the "markets" cause....I also fear that since the Newsnight management clearly want the weather, ballot "fraud" may be a serious issue. Rolling Eyes

If you want to see the new BBC Weather graphics in action then if you have access to BBC Television Centre, maybe by going on a tour, you will occasionally see them practice with the new graphics.

In the corridor along the Weather Centre there is a screan with 4 feeds from the weather studios and today i happened to pass along and see a weather forcast done with very different graphics, i presume they are the new ones.

I can say, they are very different, at least during the complete forecast I saw. It looks like a more 3D version of the Sky News weather, quite dark, the temperatures are in square boxes, the weather changes by hour like on Sky News even for the next few days. Didnt see a colour coded map of the temperatures but just a dark green one with the numbers in boxes all over, and their shade varies with temperature more than with today's graphics. Lots of animation. A bit like being in Microsoft flight simulator.

If this is what they are planning to launch then i dont like it... it's a bit dull, dark blue sea and no sunshine symbols. Lets hope it's more than what i saw!

Ahh. Thanks for that.
Someone mentioned that there would be a greater 3D element to the new package. This is the first time I've heard of the squares been used....
