I know that chances of this are extremely small, but has anyone heard anything of a new look for BBC News when the weather graphics get a new look? The current state of BBC News presentation is pretty awful!

i heard that they are going to change the titles to "warmer colours" because the current ones are a bit cold.

I don't know if you're already aware, but there's a healthy debate bubbling along on Newsnight's replacement of the Markets with weather over on the Newsnight site. My favourite comment so far:

On Fridays, will we get an in-depth review of the week's weather by the Newsnight Review folk?

I think it just shows how up-its-own-arse the show has got now.

It's still very good, but it's got to the point now when it's featuring its own bloody reports in its title sequence. Bit pathetic, if you ask me.

Newsnight is more concerned about the way it presents the news - silly little stories by Michael Crick in his helicopter, that really have absolutely no relevance to the election campaign - than the actual news it presents.

As someone points out on the BBC website - why not just have the business AND the weather and a little less of Paxman acting like a jerk. If anyone else were that awkward in their job, they'd be out. His superiority complex really gets on my nerves sometimes.

I've noticed that not one person has mentioned that there's too much sport. We get more sport a day than weather and weather affects everyone, a premership football team affects its 30,000 - 60,000 supporters. All though one could take this argument and say that business might not affect as many people as sport does.

I think it's a good idea including the weather on Newsnight but I hate those fly over maps and that small summary table (6 o' clock) with the temperatures as there's never enough time to check your area before it's disappeared and in that table my nearest place is in Leeds - a 45 minute drive away!

Whilst on the subject of Newsnight, does it still come from the Breakfast studio?

If you got rid of the Met Office forecasters, who would be writing the scripts for the newsreaders to read?

Other broadcasters buy in the forcasts from the Met Office and get their own presenters to read out the bulletins (kind of like seen on Newsnight but more professional). This is clearly cheaper than paying the Met Office for the same forcasting, plus paying meteorologists to present the weather. The new system has cost millions of pounds. The website is ridiculous and totally unnecessary in size and live information.

you can't expect the BBC to go and launch weather balloons or operate satellites; they aren't the Met Office or a University.

Well you're actually both wrong to an extent.

The BBC Weather department IS the Met Office! Ever since the 60s (I believe) the Met Office has had a department at the BBC. They are full time forecasters who also happen to present as part of their jobs (although there are some that do this as their main job). And, as is often quoted, the weather forecasts are the cheapest programmes to produce.

I'm also shocked that you find the BBC Weather website 'ridiculous and unnecessary'. I'm a physicist and am already appalled at the lack of decent scientific programming on the BBC and the weather website is a fantastic public service - it educates and informs. If you want to know if it's sunny or rainy then download one of those horrid weather things you can put on your start menu. If you want to the difference between cumulonimbus and stratus for instance then the BBC is for you!

I used to love the short ~10 min weather programmes that used to be broadcast on BBC One in which the meteorologists were actually able to explain in more depth about the physics of weather. God I'm sad!

Just think like this- how many fewer cuts would be required in BBC News if BBC Weather had NOT have spent millions on new equipment? How many fewer cuts would be required if we sacked the Met Office forcasters and allowed news presenters to read out prepared forcast scripts.....that's how you save 15% in news (or at least a large part of it) without cutting NEWS output and without the audience being any less aware of the weather in their area for the next few days.

So who would write these forecasts then? If they were to sack all the Met Office forecasters there would be no weather reports as there;s no-one left to forecast the weather!

Don't underestimate the attraction of weather bulletins - they are hugely popular. Research into local news has discovered that the audience drops off by a huge amount after their weather forecast.... hence why most regions now put their weather bulletins at the end of the programme rather than in the middle

On the contentious Newsnight weather issue, the threatened snap election has been called. Michael Fish has been called out of retirement to champion the cause for Weather, whilst Lord Lamont will be making the case for Markets.

Edit: In fact, I've decided, it's going on my fridge. It just looks too good there.

A couple of years ago Newsnight had a weather forecast at the end of the programme. So why can't the BBC do both again?
