Why dont the ****ing scots watch their own weather forcast, rather than the general one from the BBC. BBC "
British
Broadcasting Corperation" not scotish.
Yeah,
British
! Believe it or not, Scotland is part of Britain! Why should the rest of the UK be shown, while Scotland is a tiny dot?
But then the Welsh don't have quite the same identity crisis and complex that Scotland does, so they don't feel quite the same need to kick up such a huge stink. Yet.
This isn't a case of the Scots getting their knickers in a knot because of some nationalist issue - I simply want a clearer map on the forecast. To use a needlessly squewed image of the UK making things *less* clear is nonsensical.
But thanks for making me feel like somehow it's my own personal identity crisis at fault.
Helen Young on Breakfast on Monday responding to a comment about Scotland said that they can tilt the map whatever whay they wish so expect to see Scotland tilted differently as we see the graphics used more and more in the future.
Personally I like the new system, much more clear about what weather we will actually be getting instead of having to guess which symbol represents what area. The BBC obviously aren't showing us all it can do at this early stage as it would prbably be to much of a shock but I think give it time and people will see what a great system it is.

Agreed - I got the forecast info spot on going to the gym. Said it would rain over Boston and it did. Put on the waterproof and all was as described! I know the system they based it on in New Zealand can show isobars, so maybe that'll come in the not-too-distant.

Yeah they will Helen Willets (not Young) on Breakfast said they could do Isobars too...
Personally, it does not bother me that Scotland is smaller, and I do not think that the BBC intentionally made the map appear disproportionate. However, it really pisses me off when people say that the issue doesn't matter. To many people (not necessarily me) this is an important issue and yet another example of ignorance. By reinforcing that it is the
British
Broadcasting Corporation, surely this only reinforces the absurdity of the disproportionate map size and emphasis placed upon the south?
I have to say now having seen a version without the ridiculous 16:9/4:3/16:9 cropping the online video suffers (oddly enough, in the "tour of the bbc weather centre" video) it looks really good - it will take time to get used to but at last it shows the weather at each part of the country. Once the presenters get more confident with the system they will probably experiment changing the pitch of the map.
Helen Willets (not Young) on Breakfast said they could do Isobars too.
If you watch David Braine on Spotlight (957 on Astra), he starts with a map with isobars on all his forecasts, and I have to say it's a heck of a lot easier to understand.
I'm not certain, but I'm pretty sure he trained the other forecasters in the use of the new software on his "project" days at Met HQ in Exeter.
I am a fan of the new system. I believe it is an improvement and I really does annoy me when people are so so negative about relatively petty reasons. The new maps show the weather clearly! I only technically need to know whether it's raining or snowing, and that is shown by the animating rain, falling from the sky, like it tends to do, and if its cloudy the map gets darker. Those who can't tell the difference between the cloudy areas and and sunny areas need to watch the forecast more closely instead of complaining on various websites.
Whats so wrong with a brown map? I thought people liked it when the maps on News 24 used to be Yellow instead.
And for those ninnies that think its unfair that Scotland is smaller, need to get their perspectives right. I'm sure many more people would complain if the weather was given from the North, with Scotland at the bottom of the map! And for those parents who think their poor children will grow up thinking that Britain is skewed, well they are actually looking a more realisitic map of Britain! The world is on a globe, it is not flat. The BBC are correct to use global map, they are educating the people they serve, just like they should do!
Whats the big deal about the symbols too? I haven't bothered to get caps, but the map showing rain, snow on the new system is much better than the messy flat map that showed sunny, rain, snow and everything else as a symbol - because the sun symbols are not needed! To me, there is either weather or its sunny. Eitherway, they still use symbols, particularly during the Outlook screens, they have just transformed.
I saw my first forecast today and it did seem to tell the story quite well. The only problem was that when the area was completely cloud covered it was difficult to tell whether it was clear or not, but you do get a running commentary from the forecaster!
I am dissappointed that I didn't see any Isobars or fronts telling us why the weather is doing what it is, the BBC does have an education remit does it not! it's also useful to see these systems to see what could happen if the forecast is wrong!
From looking at the online graphics these look horrible and take ages for the graphics to change once the map has, I assume they're generated live. There don't seem to be as many symbols as there used to be on the map thus rendering that less clearer!
As for the aspect of the map, well, that's what the British Isles looks like from that angle! you can't do anything to change that, it's affected by the curvature of the Earth. We've been used to the traditional flat chart as it allowed the whole country to be seen easily, unfortunatly, with the closeness of the zoom and the way it is now presented we get aspecty problems! The system would be better if it could change from flat map smoothly to the realistic globe.
In summary (new style):
OK
COULD DO
BETTER
In summary (old style):
You can see the weather to a point but the clouds could be shown clearer (how about actual cloud!). The technical side of the weather should be more included

Firstly, the main problem with Scotland being so small is that it's virtually impossible to see the weather forecast there now on a small TV set.
And just because the Earth is curved, it doesn't mean that map is realistic at all. The most realistic shape (while keeping the curvature of the Earth) would be an overhead view from a point above the North Pennines, looking directly down (since that is roughly the centre of Great Britian). The forecast map at the moment is what Britian would look like looking North from above Northern France.
And for those ninnies that think its unfair that Scotland is smaller, need to get their perspectives right.
what a hillarious pun. The fact is it is impossible to see the weather properly above Blackpool. Don't give me this "well it flies around the country" business, by the time I get my bearings and work out where I am on the mpa it's flown past me.
So doesn't Scotland matter at all? I know there are a lot of idiots in this country who think we should have a seperate news show as we're so important but this map distorts the country as to make it very VERY hard to work out what the weather is up here.
The "well you'd get more complaints if it was from the north" comment holds no water either. By saying that you've only confirmed this is a problem but as it doesn't affect you it's not an important one. if so, why not just cover the weather for the South coast and ignore the rest of the country. Oh but they virtually do now.
