Because the nations didn't take the trail between the network news and the English regions opt, or the weather forecast just before 7pm - both of which have now gone.

So the nations' programmes are shorter by about the length of the trail that used to be between the national and English regional news programmes -- since this has been filled up with slightly more national programme?

If not then I'm probably being very stupid, since it seems nothing has changed from the point of view of the nations' programmes for them to be shorter.

Because the weather has been dropped just before 7 - the English regions now have a slightly longer programme but the nations have lost a bit because they're "rejoining" network a little earlier (There's more trails before 7 now the weather has gone)

e.g.:

Old schedule:
1800 News
1828 Trail
1828:30 Opt
1854:30 Headlines
1856 Regional trail
1856:30 Weather
1858 Junction

Nations get 30:00.

New schedule:
1800 News
1829 Opt including regional trail
1856 Headlines
1857:30 Junction

Nations get 28:30.

The actual timings vary slightly from day to day though.

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this before, but I noticed one of the more unusual problems posed by the new graphics on this evening's Six - for the duration of the weather bulletin, there was a large Carol Kirkwood-shaped cloud hanging over the Atlantic and the Republic of Ireland.

Presumably, it'll be raining enthusiatic goodness all over those areas.

It means we now no longer see regional idents before any of the bulletins, only a few years ago you'd have idents with an announcement saying who was presenting before every one. And people complain about ITV axing regional idents!

Ah right, I see it all now. Ta for that.

Regrettably it seems Derek's Diary is paying the price for the loss of that minute and a half -- the WI will be distraught.

On the subject of weather, I've seen several towns placed on the map some distance away from where they actually are -- which doesn't seem as accurate as they promised really.

Oh well it looks like I am in the minority section of those who do find the new style BBC Weather an improvement.

Yesterday and today I watched the weather.

Yesterday in my area the maps showed that here it would be sunny, then overcast with rain just north east of me, and rain coming in over the Bristol Channel and hitting around Cardiff. As I live in Newport the new maps showed just shade but no rain where I am, sandwiched between the rain from the north and the rain to the south. So off to work I went with no protection from the rain that would have been plonked over me using one of the old symbols and stretching across most of SE Wales.

Today was a bit easier. No rain, no sun either, but lots of dark brown bubbling up shortly after lunch (which it did almost on cue). There was however a chance of a few showers just north of south Wales, which once again would have been represented by a drop of rain far bigger than the the area affected.

On both days, no special attention was made to Wales or my area of Wales on any national weather broadcast. I still got an almost perfect actual weather forecast for my little place on the globe.

A move from generic to actual is clearer for me

Si!

I thought that was just for the first day, to give the regions extra time to explain the new graphics to viewers, I'm sure I read that somewhere. It'll be a shame if that 6:55 forecast is gone for good.

No I believe the change is permanent.

Well it does make sense to focus on having a more detailed regional forecast at that time of the evening -- mind you in what way are the nations' programmes shorter? I don't think I noticed that.

There seems to be a slight change at lunchtime as well. The regions now opt in for the next slide and then opt back out for the regional trail.

Thank goodness, this means we no longer have to sit through that tedious Skateboarders ident at 6.30 every single day! Razz It looks like this means the end of BBC London regional ident altogether, since network idents are used at 1.00, 6.00 and 10.00. I assume the other English regions still have regional idents into the national news?

well it seems stupid not to introduce the regional bulletins for the sake of "seamless-ness" when, at the same time, they are making the 7.00 junction far far far more clunky than it ever was. i think viewers are less likely to switch off during an ident, than they are during endless back to back trailers at 7.00.

midlands today have introduced puny little name astons to compensate for the lack of introduction ... although i imagine/hope common sense will prevail and we get our idents back - in the same way they crept back in the last time london abolished them.

WASN'T THAT WEATHER FORECAST ON THE SIX O'CLOCK NEWS TONIGHT A LOT GREENER THAN YESTERDAY? OR WERE MY EYES DECEIVING ME? Confused: Certainly looked greener to me? Are the BBC listening? Confused:

It seems the Northern Isles are never going to get their weather in any detail, judging by last night's forecast. Heather did not flying past or any zooming in on them, they were just as small as ever. I'd bet we'll get some angry complaints from up there! Twisted Evil
