WDSU-TV New Orleans (owned by Hearst-Argyle) initially went off the air as Hurricane Katrina made landfall. Their tower, in Chalmette, Louisiana - an eastern suburb of New Orleans that is mostly reclaimed swampland - remained upright, however, there was much flooding and destruction in that area, as it actually was in the western eyewall of Katrina as it came inland.

The station's personnel evacuated mostly to the facilities of their sister station, ABC affiliate WAPT-TV Jackson, Mississippi (about 150 miles to the north). Programming is being done from the WAPT studios, with some supplemental programming originating at another Hearst-Argyle-owned sister station, NBC affiliate WESH-TV Orlando/Daytona Beach, Florida.

Their programming is being aired on "i" affiliated (formerly PAX -- that's a whole 'nother story) WPXL-TV New Orleans, whose facilities were not damaged. The station is also being broadcast on cable systems in Houston, Dallas, Jackson, Memphis, Mobile, Orlando, Birmingham, Austin and several other areas where evacuees have settled across the South and the Southeast.

Most of their programming is from local reporters in New Orleans, along with live studio segments produced in Jackson and Orlando. However, some NBC news-related programming (including "Today" and "Dateline") is being broadcast. The station is carrying a two-part crawl across the bottom of the screen with local information and a means for people to try to contact loved ones whom they have lost contact with as a result of the evacuation and relocations.

WDSU's signal is being streamed live via Windows Media Player at mms://a845.l1291238844.c12912.g.lm.akamaistream.net/D/845/12912/v0001/reflector:38844
