It's a shame breakfast wasn't shown! Can anyone remember who was presenting on that day?

Jeremy Bowen and Sophie Raworth I believe - the A team at the time (though not normally on Fridays).

Bit of an odd edit to the start of thre 0930 section - starting from Hague's speech rather than the titles at the start.

I suspect that Breakfast might have thrown to the Hague speech and then TC1 picked up off the back of it (was this one of the years that Breakfast came from the Election set?)

There was a definite drop in sound level during the speech, making me wonder if that was an edit point and somebody's dug out the clean copy of the speech and put that on the front of the programme?

Hague resigned before 8am and Breakfast had a definite end point at 9am (and they were in their usual studio), followed by the regional half hour. I think what they were trying to do today was make sure that the full speech was aired, when perhaps only a clip was in the original broadcast (as it would have been screened a few times already?). Therefore the opening of the programme was removed, the start of the speech was edited on and that explains the sound dip and graphics appearing midway through. A theory anyway!

I love that the BBC website is being promoted simultaneously with Ceefax Page 101! That and the internet are like something from different centuries, quite a transitionary time.

Huge leap in graphics from 1997 as well. Four years earlier you had huge 'BBC BIRMINGHAM NORTH' astons dominating the entire screen and looking extremely basic and primitive, but the graphics of 2001 could very easily still work well today, very simple and clean. Odd also to think that this forum had just started at the time, there would have certainly been a thread about the coverage.

Both David Cameron and Boris Johnson were elected for the first time this year, Nick Clegg not until 2005!

Breakfast was definitely in their usual studio of TC7 with Jeremy Bowen and Sophie Raworth that morning. They also had specially updated titles and opt stings for the occasion. I think I might have recorded portions of the programme; must see if I can find the tape!

I'm 90% sure someone on this very forum explained at the time why the down-the-line screen behind David Dimbleby was so poor in quality. Does anyone remember or have a retro-fit explanation?

The programme itself looks very poor quality today, even allowing for the low quality of the BBC Parliament stream...

There seems to be a lot of mixture of analogue 4:3 and 'digital' 16:9 inserts. The way some obviously 4:3 shots have been cropped is quite jarring now.

Yep, it's a bit like all the colour/black & white switches in the 1970 (and even 1974) elections. A lot of regional news at the time hadn't gone widescreen so had to make do with being zoomed into 14:9, which especially in the case of Newsroom South East looked awful.

Interesting to think of all the improvements on television since this was first shown...no iPlayer, no HD, there were even still a lot of major programmes not made in widescreen (Big Brother, Coronation Street, Top of the Pops). I still had analogue cable at the time, not getting digital until the September!

Not forgetting that there was no Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, MySpace or even Friendster when this was shown. We had to make do with e-mails.
