BBC World, The World Today opener, 1999:

I absolutely love this opening - and the backdrop for the presenter looks like it would be suited to Breakfast in the summer... who was it who wrote the BBC World music package from 97-99?

IIRC, George Fenton composed the vast majority of BBC music prior to David Lowe. I suspect it was probably Fenton.

By the way, that particular music package was used until April 2000, when BBC World re-launched with the Lowe music. It was only BBC ONE News and News 24 that re-launched in 1999.

Yep - and he still does the theme tune for Newsnight . Thanks.

Agreed guys - I loved that era of World and the music was tremendous. On the same YouTube menu page, you will also find the closing segment of the same bulletin. Terrific music.

Thanks for your support, everyone -- I'll limit my links from now on. Smile

Here's a YouTube video showing a newscast that was really ahead of its time. You may think that having the presenters stand and walk around while delivering the news was a concept that emerged in the 1990s, but these amazing clips are actually from the late 1970s:

That music is FABULOUS

You can hear the same music in this 1979 clip from Birmingham, Alabama:

From 1982, here's a clip of NBC News Overnight , widely considered one of the best (and most unconventional) news programs in television history:

BTW, even though it has been gone for nearly a quarter century, the program has a fan page on the Web.

Staying in the U.S., here are three ABC News openers from the early 1980s ( Nightline, This Week, This Morning ) featuring the legendary ABC News theme music:
