The Australian version of NBC's Just Watch Us Now promo and an interesting clock precede this 1983 edition of Seven National News:

Seven seems to take a lot of styling from NBC and NBC News. I am curious if anyone knows that Seven or NBC had some sort of partnership back then (aside from news) seeing as many promos and themes were mimicked from NBC? Or was it just a case of Seven seeing what was on NBC and going to the producer saying we want to license this.

Seven and NBC News have long had a news partnership, as you say; I imagine using their themes/promos must have been some sort of extension of this. There were actually rumours going around just a couple of months ago that NBCUniversal were looking at buying Seven.

And 7 News still uses The Mission as their opening theme currently, like the NBC Nightly News.

Years ago, they even used intro sequences based on the NBC News originals. Instead of the Statue of Liberty...

...they used local landmarks, such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the case of ATN7:

And compare the NBC Nightly News set above with the one used by ADS7 in Adelaide at that time:

We've seen this before, but here's an Australian station (Brisbane's TVQ0, later TVQ10) that was inspired by the BBC News look of the early '80s:

Here's a 1999 edition of Media Watch from ABC in Australia. Beginning at the 3:23 mark, the program looks at changes made to Seven Nightly News and draws some parallels to Channel 4 News in the UK:

TV One, New Zealand, late-ish news, 1995:

The two anchors you see in the clip were, at the time this was broadcast, a couple on and off screen. The male anchor, Simon Dallow, now co-anchors the 6pm news on the same channel (now called TVNZ 1).

An excerpt of the Satellite News Channel from New Year's Day 1983. SNC was a short-lived CNN competitor from ABC and Group W; it was eventually bought by Ted Turner and "merged" with CNN (it effectively closed down):

Happy New Year everybody!

Before TV Azteca, in Mexico, moved into their new set, they were broadcasting their newscasts from temporary sets, virtually identical to their previous ones. The emphasis on "virtually" isn't for no reason, notice the sharper-than-usual screens.
