This is the time of year when French news goes through at least one major revamp of sets, pres or presenters. TF1 with it's new set, BFMTV launched it's new schedule today with presenters joining from LCI and Franceinfo.

And it seems la rentrée has destroyed CNEWS (ex-iTélé). There is no news now between 9am and 12pm, throughout random hours in the afternoon and the weekend evening shift is replaced by various programming. Their website is completely sensational news - it seems to be turning into tabloid TV! Franceinfo will perhaps gain some market share from this.

The TF1 new set looks good and seems to serve its purpose, but I can't help think, that with the 'landscape of France' graphics, it is very similar to that of the recent 12/13 refresh on FR3.

CNEWS didn't get off to the best of starts, the channel was on strike which led to a late launch of the channel. There were major staff resignations. Under iTélé, they had an excellent breakfast programme, which has now turned into a double headed generic bore fest.

Those viewers seem to have gone to BFMTV or Franceinfo, which thanks to it's distinctive presentation format found an opening in the market.

For those interested, Bruce Toussaint has joined BFMTV to present the 10-midnight slot and Damien Givelet from LCI has joined BFMTV to co-present mid-mornings. There's also a change at Premiere Edition with Virginie Sainsily replacing Céline Pitelet between 4h30 and 6h.

Unusually for the French, they've gone for evolution rather than revolution!

But, the music (despite the new drum underscore) ends just as it gets going, and not a fan of whatever is doing the tracking. Is it the backdrop, or the camera moving right to left?

TF1 have used this music in one form or another since 1990, oui?

Compare and contrast with the Beeb's use of David Lowe's beeps since 1999, and ITV's use of Dave Hewson's rearrangements of "The Awakening" since 1995...

If we're gonna talk long-running news themes, then the Tagesschau has been using the same six-note melody (Hammond Fantasy) since 1956, and ZDF have been using their beeps (Morse code for 'heute') since 1973. Cool And in New Zealand, 1 News has retained the same motif in their various themes since at least the late 90s.

Also, "The Fuzz", which, in its many incarnations, has been the theme to Globo's Jornal Nacional since its debut, in 1969.

Italy's RAI Uno has also used the same musical signature since the 1950s:

WPVI-TV attempted to revamp the theme in 1996, it was axed three days later after viewer complaints.

So given the big deal about the bad NBC JIP during McCains Special Report here’s how CBS handled it 32” plus a waving flag when they returned th NFL preseason football game.

I dropped the audio once the SR ended because I didn’t want to get a copy right notification and the NFL is very strict. Most networks and copyright holder have audio identification used to prevent copyrights.
