Shep on Fox News at 8am ET welcomed those on Fox News Channel and FOX stations. I guess a lot of local stations will be showing national coverage today.
Is there any reason why most presenters and reporters on all US news channels and networks wear baseball caps when covering events like this? It seems pointless to me.
Branding. Reinforcing your brand.
I agree it can look ridiculous. I'm guessing the baseball hats with their bills out helps protect their face (or atleast glasses) more than a hood or it works better in conjunction.

That makes sense. Thank god we don't go down that route. I know we have jackets and umbrellas, but the caps looks ridiculous.

I was thinking that also helps their hair dry and from flying around - I imagine it's even needed for women. They can quickly put their hair back in a pony tail, pull it through the back and you don't have to worry about hair flying about. I guess the same can be said for men that have longer cuts.
As for the ridiculousness it probably works better than pulling the drawstrings around the hood of your jacket tight around your face.
Yep - an umbrella makes sense in the UK in most rain, it doesn't make sense in very high winds like these, so a hat makes a lot of sense...
However in the UK, unike the US, a baseball cap is relatively unusual, and usually a bit of a 'fashion victim' kind of statement - as they historically haven't been a part of British culture (we don't play baseball...) and are (or at least were) seen very much as an 'Americanism' (or a 'we're just back from holiday in the US' statement).
In the 80s I often heard baseball caps called 'IQ Reducers' - as the minute you put one on, you looked a lot less intelligent... Those times have changed - but wearing one in the UK would be seen a bit differently to wearing one in the US.
If you're interested in American media generally, I do recommend subscribing to CNN Reliable Sources' daily newsletter. There is an impressive amount of effort that goes into summarising media coverage of major issues each day:
Journalist Charlie Rose of CBS This Morning has been accused of sexual misconduct. Yet another famous person involved in this and the irony that he would have been reporting on others being accused. Interesting one for CBS to handle considering the popularity of This Morning of recent.
CBS News is certainly doing what any reputable news operations should do and they arent trying to cover things up or pretend like its not happening like FOX and their avalanche of incidents, when they never mention or rarely acknowledge how their employees have assaulted attacked harassed and allegedly raped each other.
