Or indeed it's any of our business.

Where she went on her holidays would be none of our business, but I don't see what's wrong with discussing the impact such things have on possible public perception of on-screen programming.

I think it's also perfectly valid to say why Victoria Derbyshire has so much time off is none of our business, nor does it really relate to this forum.

Yeah but you relate it to the fact that it's a programme named after her, that even on 5 Live it was very rare she would do a week of broadcasts and within the first few weeks of this TV show starting, she was off. We aren't speculating or probing, just making an observation that she does seem to have a fair number of days off.

I prefer Naga with this format, but the fact is that it's still a stinker, especially on the NC.

I caught the last 15 mins which consisted of a knitting segment and then padding with the BBC Trending journalist discussing David Beckham's parenting on social media.

Derbyshire is a small part of the larger issue surrounding this show, the fact she's off in the school summer holidays isn't.

BBC News Daily? The Magazine?

I like 'The Magazine'. It could be tied in with the features on The Magazine on the BBC News Website.

Get a two host partnership alternating every few days, not necessarially just from the News team. Interject with half hourly news bulletins. Plonk Derbyshire back on 5 Live, and you might be on to a winner.

Essentially a carbon copy of Breakfast, just less newsy. Might as well base it at Salford while they're at it.

Do we have ratings of VD while we're at it to see how badly it's bombing?

In that format you could probably run it as a continuous show from 9:00 though to 12:00.

I dont see why the news channel can't be made up of blocks of branded programming, like BBC World News is.

Derbyshire doesn't even make the NC's top 10, despite being a flagship NC show.

For the week ending Aug 2, the most viewed show was the Saturday 2230 edition of The Papers.

Because they aren't the same premise. BBC News is a Rolling News Channel where as BBC World News is simply a News and Current Affairs Channel. BBC News has to cover breaking news stories as they happen, cover press conferences and will spend longer on a new story than BBC World News does. BBC World News's programmes cater to different audiences - Impact for instance is aimed at Asia. BBC News caters for only one audience. BBC World News's blocks also allow BBC Worldwide to appeal to different advertisers in different ways. BBC World News is essentially just a series of back to back news bulletins with different lighting, music and names. BBC World only break schedule if it is a major news story. BBC News is essentially however one rolling programme for most of the day with a much more flexible schedule.

And this recent experimentation with blocks on BBC News has certainly failed. Business Live is the only new programme that works - but it is essentially a spiritual successor to Business Breakfast. Derbyshire is just one complete mess with no direction, viewers or point and Outside Source doesn't work on BBC News but then we never really had a version of WHYS.

Outside Source is a terrible gimmick of a programme. I ended up watching a bit of it last night and it's basically just a bulletin dressed up as "something else". All the same stories were covered on other World News programmes yesterday, but without OS's strained presentation style, and all the cat-like clawing at the screen the presenter has to do to get it to work.

Fair enough if you want a programme from the newsroom, just present it from a little desk, perhaps like the early days of News 24.

As for OS - the music, the wobbly handheld camera shots, and patronising presentation style does not make for enjoyable viewing.

Off topic admittedly, but I would have infinitely preferred a World News Today simulcast 7 days a week - Outside Source is probably the worst show on the NC at this moment in time.

Out of all the World simulcasts, Newsday has got it spot on since the recent revamp.

As for Outside Source, I'd like to see more of a UK focus during the 2100 bulletin, yet it's still better than VD.

According to reports it has an average of around 88,300 viewers. However on occasion it appears to have been much lower.

I think that amounts to about 17 BARB household viewers, doesn't it? Must be close to scraping the statistical noise floor...

I think that sums up the production values of the programme - replacing quality with 'edgier' but only if 'edgier' means amateurish. Also interesting to note that during the what's coming up promos - it is referred to as place for Breaking News and Interesting Debate.
