CNN said unconfirmed reports of 7 people dead. An eyewitness said that before the collapse, a huge plume of beige smoke came up, so who knows what caused it. There is live helicopter video on CNNi now, which is simulcasting CNNUS. In a situation like this, helicopter do make sense, compared to stupid car-chases.

Just a question, but in a case such as this would the Emergency Alert System have been activated?

Nah, when I was in the US, it was only used for testing mostly. In the west, during tornado warnings, it goes out. I distinctly remember on 9/11 the alert going out, but when the transmitter collapsed with the buildings, it was just dead air.

Interesting article on the aftermath of the transmitter's destruction:

EAS is usually only used for emergencies, like tornadoes, earthquakes, terrorist attacks, or incidents where the welfare of the general public is in question.

Yes, in the case of this bridge collapse, putting out an emergency warning after the event is pointless

I bet the news teams in the UK are pretty busy today - so much news in one day. This bridge collapse, Interest Rates, Jean Charles De Menezes press conference.. the list goes on hehe

Not to mention the Liverpool van blast which has been suprisingly low on the news agenda. If that were in London...

Liverpool blast - not a mention on N24!

However, I have concerns about a Police Commissioner in London who place "absolute trust" in someone who heads an organisation which shoots innocent people. Now that's BLIND trust! Shocked

The govenor of Minnesota held a News conference which was carried live on Sky News and BBC News 24 but NOT on CNNi of all places.

Well at least you do not have to listen to the North West Tonight reporter screaming at you. My sister tells me that 'Abbi Jones' screams her reports to camera all the time.
I do agree about network news being London bias...but they could argue that Greater London has the largest population density in the UK. London is also the capital. However, I would like to see more reports from other locations in the UK.
