I might be wrong on this as it's a long time ago but I'm pretty certain for a time UK Today actually started at 18:00 on BBC News 24 (and were talking very early days of N8 here when Digital TV was in probably 5 peoples homes if that). I remember that when News 24 used to handle UK Today one of the presenters on the 16:00-19:00 shift would pre-record a headline insert for the 6 for when they opt to the regions before the titles. This was recorded in the News Centre with some funny purple lamps behind them (I think the News Centre was still heavily branded in the flags décor at the time). Gwenan Edwards & Martine Croxall became the main presenters of UK Today when it came from N6 as it's own program rather than a News 24 produced program.

This clip two minutes in is the same shot as was used by UK Today for it's headline inserts.

There was also the Ten O'Clock News Extra service a few years later - which was supposed to add extra production and background to the Ten O'Clock News...

That was quite an impressive service, I remember being quite impressed that the graphics were able to load so well on my old Freeview box.

And the short bulletins I think, too.

I remember UK Today being on DTT as well when I had an OnDigital box.

It would have been on News 24, but I assume not on BBC One.

Apparently it was shown when they hadn't the technical abilities to have regional variations of BBC One on DTT. Scotland, Wales and NI ceased showing it in 2001 but English regions continued until 2002 when BBC London became the sustaining feed.

Scotland Wales and NI only showed it if they failed to opt. They had regional programmes on all digital platforms by day 1. The main programmes were shown on News 24 in those areas, of course, as were the short bulletins on BBC 2.

Are you sure about that? Wasn't DSat BBC Two originally pan-UK at launch of digital services in '98, with BBC Choice having national variations. The BBC Choice variations were scrapped, and the bandwith re-allocated (and playout areas repurposed?) for BBC Two national variations instead?

Yep - single camera shooting into the FiveLive production area. Was used for pre-recording links for the bulletins which were then edited into the pre-recorded bulletins (the presenter also produced, and often edited and played out the bulletins themselves)
