It would surely make more sense to simulcast Sportsday and the rest of the hour of the BBC News Channel than just air that bloody animation for half an hour every day.

It's not just an animation at 6:30 - after a minute it goes to trailers for BBC One shows.

Surely they could stick up a "press green for local news" in the same way that they do "press green for hd" on BBC SD channels currently.

I remember UK Today being on DTT as well when I had an OnDigital box.

It would have been on News 24, but I assume not on BBC One.

Apparently it was shown when they hadn't the technical abilities to have regional variations of BBC One on DTT. Scotland, Wales and NI ceased showing it in 2001 but English regions continued until 2002 when BBC London became the sustaining feed.

Wasn't there some kind of six o'clock news extra or some such in the back half hour? A phone-in/text-in kind of show, can't remember if it was red button or on the News Channel.

That rings a bell. Wasn't Manisha Tank involved in it? I'm almost certain that it was during the red and cream era.

The 6 Forum? It was only once a week though wasn't it?

That RealVideo link still works as well, playing in VLC.

UK Today was broadcast on BBC One England on DTT, DSat and DCab from launch - because for the first few years of digital TV there were no English regional opt-outs on the digital platforms. If you were an early adopted of OnDigital or Sky Digital and lived in England, you'd have seen UK Today on BBC One instead of regional content.

When News 24 launched in 1997 there were back half hours in the Krishnan and Val 1200-1600 slot called "Active World" and "Active UK" which were single headed (allowing one of the two presenters to knock off early!) These ran for the first year of News 24, when it was presented from N9 (the original News 24 studio - not then known as N9) These were nothing really to do with UK Today - but did mark out a regional half hour concept for the channel.

In November 1998, News 24 moved to N8 on the same day that the BBC launched their DSat and DTT networks, and on that day UK Today was produced by News 24 to fill the gaps in the BBC One England schedule on digital platforms.

The 1330 (I think) and 1830 bulletins were opt-ins to a News 24 produced bulletin, whilst the other content was pre-recorded from a newsroom camera, edited and played out from an Avid Newscutter in an edit suite.

This continued for a while, and then they revamped the service, with the 1830 bulletin coming from N6, with a 30" junction from BBC One to turnaround the studio (though the opening was pre-recorded during the afternoon). This was in the era when English regions (on analogue) opted back for N6 to provide a 90" national headline recap (with no junction between the end of UK Today and the network headlines - it was a hard opt-in and quite a tricky timing job - as the UK Today director had to keep UK Today to time, and then opt-in the regions and do a 90" timed bulletin)

DTT/DCab eventually got regional opting functionality for BBC One, so the service was then only on DSat I think.

UK Today was axed when capacity was found to provide a basic Red Button regional service at 1830 on DSat - which carried Manchester, Birmingham, Southampton and possibly Bristol or Newcastle? And then when Astra 2D launched with a tight UK/Ireland spot beam, it was possible to ditch encryption (which had been used for rights reasons) and this allowed the BBC to spend the money previously spent on encrypting to lease some more transponders and put all the regions up on satellite.

The Six Forum was produced either from N6 or from Millbank - and was axed before UK Today moved into N6 ISTR.

There was also the Ten O'Clock News Extra service a few years later - which was supposed to add extra production and background to the Ten O'Clock News...

The other region that was carried on BBCi on Sky was Look North from Leeds, from what I remember only the 6.30pm bulletins were available, and when it came to Wimbledon the regional news wasn't even on at all.

UK Today bulletins were also carried on BBC 2 throughout the UK, as it wasn't at that point regionalised anywhere.

Scotland Wales and NI only showed it if they failed to opt. They had regional programmes on all digital platforms by day 1. The main programmes were shown on News 24 in those areas, of course, as were the short bulletins on BBC 2.
