After UK Today and before Sportsday started on the news channel, what filled the back half hour after a national bulletin? Also at the top of the programme, the national headline bed used to play through the regional one so that there was no bad join, but now it cuts to the regions bed which has a bad transition, what changed that?
When UK Today was still on the air, did News 24 simulcast the flagship 6.30pm edition? Or did the channel filled the whole 6pm hour with their own bulletin?
Ah! So was it just a normal NC/N24 hour or did the do their own version of the national bulletin
Isn't a news channel hour basically their own version of a national bulletin anyway?
I can't remember that much about it, I think it was normal news channel programming but signed at 1 O'Clock?
It was just like any other hour on BBC News 24. It was around early 2006 that they introduced simulcasting, just before N6 was revamped with BARCOs I seem to recall. They did a big drive for a '10 o'clock News Hour' which was fundamentally then 10 o'clock news followed by News 24, much like it is today.

The original version of UK Today was presented by the News 24 presenters, perhaps when it featured at 6:30pm only?. It later became a separate programme with it's own presenting team.
I think UK Today was a great idea and would be better than Sportsday and the programmes that fill the slot on BBC One HD in England.
Who would watch it when you can now watch your own regional news or even choose to watch another region? There is no need for a programme like that now, especially with DQF in full flow.
Wasn't there some kind of six o'clock news extra or some such in the back half hour? A phone-in/text-in kind of show, can't remember if it was red button or on the News Channel.

That rings a bell. Wasn't Manisha Tank involved in it? I'm almost certain that it was during the red and cream era.
I can't remember for how long UK Today was simulcast on News 24. Of course it was originally a News 24 production but became useful as a 6.30pm filler when BBC One launched on digital satellite and before all the regional versions became available. At that time it used to come from N6 - there was a very small desk and CSO set-up opposite the main news desk during the red and cream era. As I recall, News 24 used to do its own thing at 6.00pm, usually presented by Matthew Amroliwala and Jane Hill if I'm not mistaken. I cannot remember when UK Today stopped being shown on News 24 - it feels like Sportsday has been at 6.30pm for years and years.
