From what i remember, UK Today was a right pain in the rear at 1:30pm weekdays. For some reason there would always be a lot of news happening at this time of day and it really restricted News 24 to some degree. Half the time BBC One ended up crashing into News 24 in the middle of a live or something. It didnt look very good. But i dont think UK Today got much in the way of ratings anyway. It was only ever to be a tempory filler programme.

Slightly off topic, but why don't BBC ONE join N24 at a convienent point overnight?

Everytime I've caught the opt in, it's always mid report/mid bulletin !

Do the N24 overnight presenters normally say 'Welcome to viewers on BBC One/ in Wales / in Scotland etc who are just joining us' ?

Surely BBC One could run a few trails/filler progs etc, until they could join at the TOTH/ BOTH !

out of interest, when did the bbc stop doing the seperate continuity announcements for digital and analog?

I think they went around the time that the analogue presentation area (aka NTA) was closed, and the digital presentation area (the DTA) took over.

There was (and may still be) the ability to split the analogue and digital networks (they used to show separate 4:3 and 16:9 versions of films for a while after the NTA shut, by using a 3rd presentation area ISTR) but I don't think this is done routinely, and not for live presentation announcements.

they presumably don't have to put up the "Channel Islands too" DOG

They still do at the moment, noggin, though I've been waiting to witness its demise ever since they changed the out-cue script.

I wonder how the DOG is triggered - given that the gallery is in Jersey, but the DOG inserted in Plymouth!

If this gives any clues, the DOG appears on top of the true 16:9 picture, before the sides jump in when the 4:3/14:9 gallery is opted in.

Reverse GPI on the Jersey-Plymouth 4 x 2Mbs link.

It all depends on when the BBC One schedule finishes for the night. They can only fill with trailers etc for so long. I haven't seen a BBC One opt in for a long time, but they did used to wait for a junction to opt in to cleanly. Either as the presenter started reading a story or the weather or something. Sometimes on BBC One they would play the N24 titles and there would be a very long hold until you actually joined N24 as they waited for an opt point. They started using the N24 countdown at one point as well. If BBC World was not currently taking a feed the presenter would welcome viewers from BBC One only (not the nations as they opted in all over the place).

BBC One's handovers to News 24 used to be a lot cleaner than they are now, either using trails and/or the countdown if they could go in at a junction, or holding the News 24 logo until they could join between reports.

These days they just crash in whenever, usually mid-sentence.

In the early days there was quite a lot of negotiation between BBC One Presentation and the News 24 editorial teams - to either find a clean opt-in point (after a report), or to provide a script for the continuity announcer to explain what programme they were joining (if it was a back half -hour) - and if the opt-in was close to a quarter-hour, they'd delay running the crawling headlines until BBC One joined.

In the VERY early days - they'd occasionally also provide clean opt-ins for Scotland etc.

These days I think they make less of a deal of it - and just crash in.

Surely it can't be that difficult for BBC1 to schedule their late-nights accordingly so that they go to BBC News 24 on the hour or half-hour.

As Noggin said in the old days the BBC One opt in was quite important for News 24 - especially if they were in a domestic only back half hour as there was potentially a big audience joining.

I see what your saying. In the early days News 24 had to attract an audience, where as these days it gets a regular audience of it's own.
