Brief update now from Vicki Young (isn’t she good) at Downing Street, breaking into the Nicola Sturgeon presser.

Lots of awkward pauses and uncertainty back in the studio however. I presume those long gaps were to facilitate the departure of BBC1 and BBC World, in the run-up to the One?

Is there no way they can get rid of these constant pauses/'saying goodbye to viewers...' at various junctures? So jarring. There must be a way they could use a sting of some sort of pausing for headlines etc. to do it.

A random sting halfway through a conversation with a reporter (followed by a pause to allow for a clean opt out) would be much more jarring than the pause alone. Even if surrounded with "You're watching BBC News" / "Welcome back, I'm talking to so-and-so".

May also be due to lots of gallery talkback/instructions at busy times.

They need to do the proper ending like they do on BBC Worid News.

I’d rather they do that than have coverage flash cut to another. It’s occurred mid sentence several times when World News cuts to domestic.

Over the weekend I just saw the awkward transition when BBC World News was taking domestic, the hour started with a clean open, then mid report (it was a phoner that they billed as live) it cut to a paused image of the domestic countdown without numbers and then a clip of the Queen was played. I thought the system crashed until I saw the silhouetted 10 in the globe.

In my mind they could have handled it much more professionally by fading out the package and have the anchor do a hiccup saying “we now pause to welcome viewers on BBC One.”

Way too much of tonight's ITV bulletin dedicated to one patient when 786 Brits died in the last 24 hours.
JCB and JamesWorldNews gave kudos

Genuine question: I’ve seen these black “Breaking News” straps used quite a lot recently. Why not the normal red ones? Is this style reserved for use on certain types of programme, or is it an error? Sorry if the question has been asked before.

Hmm. I can understand that but (and let me make this perfectly clear this view is certainly not a slur on those who have passed) the Prime Minister is one of the most prominent figures in the UK (second after her majesty)

Its what's known in the trade as "news values":

What a tedious boring card you've just played there

Like when certain people complain about coverage of "an old lady" if The Queen or the royal family gets a decent length of air time.

You know very well why a lot of the bulletin (and probably the BBC's as well) dedicated a lot of time to "one patient"

The BBC News gallieries have a few different outputs with different graphics, for example with 'BBC News' and 'BBC World News' logos and tickers and the ticker-less version used for the main network bulletins.

There seems to be a version of the output sometimes seen on online clips like the above which doesn't feature any logos and renders all straps as the normal grey version even when the graphics seen on air are in red breaking news mode. I expect it wouldn't have looked like that on air (though I haven't seen a lot of World lately so I might be wrong about that).

I think you'll find that most of it was actually concerning who was taking on the interim responsibility as Head of Government to replace that incapacitated 'one patient', rather than the condition of the individual.

the graphics on the News Channel were the normal red ones - I'm guessing this was clipped from the online stream.
