Why is Sky still pushing this petition - All 3 party leaders have agreed to the debate.

I'm with Dunedin - whilst it is agreed "in principle" it is far from a done deal.

As others have said, Brown seems to want a series of debates starting well before an election, and also wants them to include other ministers - perhaps thinking that the Conservatives do not have the strength in depth.

Cameron has most to lose, being the front runner, and so it is arguably not in his interest. He just wants a few debates during the campaign.

Yes, it does seem a bit unnecessary doesn't it?

I wonder if it's designed to keep up the pressure on broadcasters and the leaders to make good on their proposals and promises, or simply a bit of self-promotion for Sky? In fairness to them, they were first off the mark with this issue after all. But agree, it seems rather pointless at present ...

It's self publicity, and rather odd. It makes them, not the principle, the story.

They weren't first off the mark- they simply adopted a unilateral line whilst negotiating with the BBC and ITV. I think both the BBC and ITV were frankly rather pissed off at BSkyB for potentially ruining the behind the scenes discussions between the parties and broadcasters.

So we're going to have this petition being advertised for the next 6 months - great. I think many people will be bored at the prospect of the debate by the time it comes around.

well you could have it on ITV or Five, Why should something "SO called Important" by sky terms be only available to a select number of viewers. it should be open to everyone. Its NOT UP TO Commercial broadcaster what needs to be done in an election run up.

But Sky News is available for free to almost everyone with digital TV, which is over 90% of the population. And you can probably add a few per cent if you include those able to watch online as well. It's hardly a 'select number of viewers' as you say.

I just don't want SKY doing this, There could answer questions or do stuff which could make anyone look bad, but by the time OFcom acts it will be to late.

I take it you read this bit on the Sky News website:

Quote:
Sky News will televise the [three way leader] debate and stream it live on skynews.com, and Independent Radio News will simulcast it to all its 300 stations across Britain, [John] Ryley, [head of Sky News] said.

The broadcaster will act in consultation with an independent body to ensure impartiality and offer the debate live and unedited to any competitors that want to carry it.

What exactly are you objecting to? You're not making a lot of sense.
