Off to Darlington on 18th August for a few days to see a friend, so have been sampling the local news programmes up there... couple of questions regarding Tyne Tees weather...

Who is the weather forecaster on Tyne Tees (man with grey hair and a strong accent)?

and

What is it with him and "Harbootle" (I think the area's called) the last couple of days I've been watching, he's had an anagram of it before it changes to the proper name...?

The weatherman is probably Bob Johnson... the North's equivalent to Carl Tyler.

Never heard of Carl Tyler!

But now I know Bob Johnson I managed to find a website which tells you all about him, and even about the silly place names he comes up with!

To be honest, the only thing I watch on ITV these days is Bob's forecasts. Of course there's the anagrams, and the first letter words:

...but there's also the "Weather Village" (shown before the sponsor), the unusual features such as "Event" or "Barometer Check" [remember to give it a wee bash], and of course the pre-forecast chatter at 6.26. Be careful on them "skitey bits", and up on the Border today, it's "guy driech".

Beats the Leeds team any day.

Carl Tyler, presenter of Meridian Weather until recently... but now it is mainly Martyn Davies or Gemma Humphries.

Anyone else remember Yorkshire's Bob Rust? He was of a similar ilk. Can't find any pictures of him anywhere though.

Bob Rust has appeared on a number of those bloopers programmes, usually in some four-lettered tirade against himself.

Bob Rust did the Network North weather for a while in the early 90s when Tyne Tees had a separate weatherman for the south of the region (question is, does anyone remember the smarmy bloke who was the main NN presenter in the early days -- wasn't he called Wheeler or something?)

Bobs Rust and Johnson are both complete legends. I wonder what happened to Rob Ballach and Simon Williams (the two other weather personages who joined TTTV in 1990 along with Bob)?

Bob Johnson is a North-East legend. The banter between him and Mike Neville is quality.
