TV3 Ireland has announced that it is unvieling a new bulitten in the Autumn, with Vincent Browne (recently sacked from his long-running RTÉ Radio 1 programme) as anchor. The programme will no doubt replace the existing TV3 News Tonight, although I would hope it would be a bit earlier if Browne is going to get any sort of audience
Details are sketchy at the moment but in today's Indo a virtual studio was mentioned and a November start date.
TV3 seem to have replaced their news studio'd rear-projection screens with either LCDs or CSO. They've also stopped using studio wide shots (including cameras etc) and replaced them with an RTE-style zoom-in and zoom-out.
This may be taking place to allow for preparation of a new set, as they did around this time 2 years ago when the newsroom background was replaced with plain blue for a few days before the new set was unveiled.
Maybe this means a new, more serious style of news pres from TV3?
Well, Vincent Browne's bulittens should be serious. He isn't exactly known as a lightweight, he's been editor of a broadsheet Sunday newspaper, owner and editor of two current affairs magazines, and has had columns in various other newspapers. He's also a trained barrister, though he doesn't practice much these days.
His interview style is pretty hard-hitting, so don't expect the fluff we've come to expect from TV3 News.
On the other hand, one has to wonder how long his career with the station will last, and whether any seriousness in his bulitten will filter down to News at 5:30...
Odd decision. TV3 seems to do well at look young and vibrant and Vincent is old. Will this mean there will only be one traditional news bulletin in the day (530)?
I'm surprised people here think that he's presenting a news bulletin. Given how utterly ghastly he is presenting television (allbeit by no means a fault), a news bulletin would be the last production on the face of the plant you'd thow him into.
It's a Prime Time/Newsnight-type programme he's going to present - an ever-so-slightly more coherent version (hardly difficult) of RTÉ's Midnight Court he presented on Sunday nights a number of years back. Essentially a programme RTÉ should be doing if they bothered their asses to revive the stimulating Fergus & Finlay/Later with O'Leary format.
I wish Vincent every success, but can't see it lasting beyond two/three series. TV3 have the commitment of an autistic pole dancer when it comes to such home production.

When you decide to call the programme "TV3 Nightly News", you can be forgiven for believing the content of the programme, will, in fact, be news!

I tend to agree with this one. TV3 have a habit of burying their few political slots late at night or in low viewership positions....
