Thanks for all those pictures SNI.

Cannot agree with rdd about the studio being the best we've had in Ireland for a long time - it is appalling; nothing but a series of flimsy units, some propped up on legs, all lined up alongside each other.
There's not unity to the scheme at all as they're relying on the clutter of 'all the technical stuff' to dominate in shot rather than the set.

The fundamental flaw they've made in my view in the use of the nasty wide is that you never see all the technical elements on a National News bulletin. News 24 maybe (though I still despise it), but never on national bulletin.
So not only do they look unprofessional, they lack identity now too with the loss of a distinctive set scheme.

They've created a vague American rolling news look, where identity in terms of set and presenter shots matters little, and are depending on big crass graphics instead. So out goes traditional styling and conventions, and in comes a 'who gives a heck' scheme of bland backgrounds, varing presenter positions, different frame sizes of mid-shots and MCUs, obligatory shot of technical element of production, and of course big bold ever-moving and distracting graphics.

It's a rolling news image they have adopted, not that of a national terrestrial broadcaster - there's a big difference. Not to say that this isn't what they want - to detach themselves from RTÉ/BBC-like contraints and come across as more 'cool' Rolling Eyes

I hope to God RTÉ acknowledge the difference between rolling and national news too, and do not fall over themselves in attempting to emulate TV3's crass scheme.

In their favour, some elements of the headline sequence are nice, and their on-air production values are as good as ever.

Why? lol... I personally think 3 News over here is far better than TV 3 News in Ireland. Heres our set below...

Where the heck is the comparsion!!

What many dont understand is, that TV3 are in a Business park, its not a purpose built tv studio, I believe.

Plus they dont get any money only from the advertisers, so this is quite good considdering that

Yes, they're located out on the fringes of Dublin's ring motorway - the M50. The building was purpose built for them, but it's still not very flexible. Aside from a smallish low-ceilinged main studio used for their breakfast programme, there's little else out there with the exception of the Newsroom and a tiny studio used for two other programmes.

Saying that, they more than have the resources to build a decent set if they wanted - Ireland has the same population as New Zealand, and TV3 over there is presumably operating soley on advertising revenues also, as per the Can West model. Sets are comparitively inexpensive nowadays; what they cost can be earned back in the space of two or three bulletins in advertising revenues.

I think TV3's previous set, while somewhat frumpy and ill-proportioned, was far superior to their new look:

It has a unity and cohesiveness to it; by contrast the relaunch is a mish-mash of elements that all mush together into a blur of plastic panels, token strips of timber, and moving screens - it could be any station anywhere in the world. A complete mess:

I mean it would not surprise me if TV3 Ireland had copied the new look from elsewhere.
