TV3 News here in Ireland has been given a brand new look, one that makes RTE look rubbish, and is possibly one of the best Ireland has seen in years.

2 Rear Projectors, One Plasma, and interesting desk, no more weather from CSO.

Only downside, the graphics are huge, but I like them!!!!

Hope to get some caps soon!!

Please tell me you are kidding? It is an absolutely abysmal new look. The titles are crap and the remix of the theme tune is terrible. The animation on screen behind claire was far too fast and distracting, and the graphics, don't even get me started about the oversized aston which couldn't even fade in/out properly most of the time.

I know I complained about the 60 watt lightbulbs all over the stale old set, but this new setup is absolutely vile in comparison.

Brill....can't wait to see it. Is it widescreen? Perhaps that's why the graphics look massive, they're blown up to 4:3 until they channel goes fully widescreen.

Well if you want my opinion, I do like it! Sure there is always goin to be work to do to make it great, but its a MAJOR improvement on the old studio. I actually turned off TV3 many times becouse I couldnt stand the look of it. And as for Ireland AM, they might be able to do a bit more presentation wise with the news, I'm waiting and seeing

Good God SNI - how can you think this to be an improvement?!! Smile
I'd agree with Noel - it's one of the worst schemes I've ever seen!

(sorry I've posted this on another forum but anyway)
The whole scheme bar the monitor unit to the side is cheap, crass and vulgar.
The astons are by far the worst - truly astonishingly bad even by the sensationalist standards of TV3.

The moving background is distracting, the laughably large desk mic in shot is the best joke ever, and probably the worst of all has to be the wide shot of the studio with cameras monitors and cables in view 'to make us look all modrin like'.
It looks incredibly unprofessional and is part of this broader craze of late aimed at shattering the illusion of television. It doesn't work, especially with TV3 News where it's just a mess, especially when you see the newsreader still staring into the previous camera when the cut to wide is made - truly appalling.
Indeed why bother going to the effort of building a new set with snazzy new materials only to show all of the crap in front of it?!!

If RTÉ News so much as dare attempt to emulate this for their relaunch in January in a typically juvenile attempt to copy News 24....if they so much as dare...

Whereas TV3 News' production values in terms of report editing and studio direction are still far superior to RTÉ in every respect, they've let themselves down big time now in studio presentation.
So in a stark turnaround, RTÉ News now reign supreme with their Star Trek desk, matchbox set and scuffed floor Shocked

They're not broadcasting in widescreen, though the cameras are probably enabled for it for the new year.

Interesting. Given TV3 are apparently getting a big rebrand in the new year, I'm surprised they have gone for a relaunch now. WIll be interesting to see it on News Tonight, er, tonight.

The TV3 website has also got a relaunch today. Given that its looked the same way since 1999 or so, its probably about time...

Initial reaction at 5;30 (I knew it was happening and watched intentionally) was that I liked the opening titles. That was until I saw them again at 6:30 and what's with the "TV THREE NEWS" jumping all over the screen as if the PC wasn't able to cope with the speed of it. Mad

The reworked theme tune I find it hard to criticise them on - SKY reworked their theme tune for around 6 overhauls afterall so I suppose they're entitled to do that. Smile

The studio - OK I suppose it's ok overall as the other one did look dated. Smile But the moving graphics behind her - I was waiting for one to explode and knock her out Razz Then there was the two "standing" areas - didn't really see the point on that one Confused

Graphics - Twisted Evil Evil or Very Mad those bloody straps - just awful - someone obviously went at 5:10 "oh God we need straps, quick do them up in Microsoft Paint!"

Overall - old look 3/10, new look 4/10 - so a slight improvement!

Caught News Tonight last night. I suppose I should start with the positive: the studio is a big improvement on anything we've seen in Irish TV so far.

Right, positive over...

Whoever said in the Sky News thread that they couldn't make astons any bigger was wrong. Way wrong... TV3's astons are now massive. They use an italic font which seems like something out 1980s/early 1990s US TV. Even then I don't think there are many US stations which use mixed case italics any more...

They tried to do a 2001 ITV News thing with the headline sequence, with little "tvthree News" logos going round. It looks awful. In general the graphics seem to be very busy and distracting. Too many things going on.

The overall look and feel is very American. It feels very out of place here and the astons simply have to be made, well about 1/3rd of the size they are now...

Ronan is correct when he describes the new look as American Local news 80's style. They should remove or Reduce the massive fonts, Reduce the TVThree news Logo, and removing that horrible spinning *three news* over the opening headlines . But they have at least tried.

Dont you think the high ceiling shot of the studio resembles that of BBC World's.

I quite like it, a lot better than RTE's studio. But I think it would look better if the newsroom was put back on the rear projection screen as before. I like the high shot of the studio, looks quite good. Reminds me of Sky News for some reason.
