And worth noting that, despite several incidents of protesters swearing in the background, the BBC has not apologised. The right decision.

The Sky apology was not about background swearing. The swearing occurred during a live interview with a demonstrator.

The BBC would have done the same.

I was actually commenting on other occasions where they have apologised for background swearing.

I was pleased to see last nights violent protests made the first story on ABC World News with Diane Sawyer last night - curious because the nights after our general election the results/ outcomes weren't even mentioned [in our slightly edited version, at least]. Curious that on iTunes, they've edited out the story from the video version of last night's programme (under podcasts), yet the audio version still features it. Some sort of copyright issue with the pictures in the report, perhaps?

What are Ofcom's rules concerning swearing on live TV? Do the broadcasters basically get away with it if it's outwith their control?

Ofcom posted:
Ofcom’s audience research shows that the [F word] and its derivatives are considered to be very offensive, and therefore this language should not be broadcast before the watershed.

Ofcom recognises that the transmission of ‘live’ programming presents particular difficulties and compliance challenges as regards the use of unexpected offensive language.

Lifted from a complaint about an incident on Sky Sports News:

Mind you, considering only one person complained about that one, they probably get away with it if nobody complains and Ofcom literally isn't watching...
