In what way, exactly?
Well I am not really sure, but I just believe he is better paired with Mary, and he has been presenting the show for a year and a half now and I am guessing that since he has presented the ratings have steadily increased and many have got used to him presenting it. It is also seen as his and Mary's show nowadays.
But if Mary Nightingale is going on maternity leave again? It might be a good idea....

But for me I'm guessing Mark Austin might be the best choice at the minute, but then again he is suited more to the Evening News.

It has to be Mark. I can't see ITV poaching someone from the Beeb to be their main presenter, it just sends out all the wrong signals - we don't have anyone good enough etc etc and it would upset those at ITV News already.
What the might do though is promote Mark and then poach someone to replace him. That way they get to piss the BBC off a little.

I don't seem to have caught that much of Mark Austin.
Anybody care to give chapter and verse on exactly WHY he's that good?

He actually seems quite nervous sometimes, at least to me. Well maybe not nervous, but fiddles with his papers quite a lot. I dont want to sound like a dodgy psychic but his body-language says to me that he's the quiet boy in the class. I don't really know how to explain it other than that! His voice isn't as commanding as say someone like Bill Neely - who can really make the telly vibrate when he wants your attention.
Yet saying all this about Mark Austin, I still find him a very good presenter - along with Mary. I wouldn't like to see Mark and Mary get split up because Mark has a new job presenting the 10.30 programme.

Last year in Iraq, when he was standing up presenting live on the Evening News he was definately nervous. You could see him physically shaking slightly and he kept fidgeting with his papers as you say.

Bit of a random comment, but I really like Kay Burley on Sky News, and I think she would fit the 10.30 programme very well. She is very experienced, very professional and has the ITV News edge; accessible!

have you ever seen breaking news on that set?
I take it back, it is quite scary! I bet Mark is a nervous wreck when there's news to break, I just had a visualisation of him jumping and dropping all his papers. Going a bit off topic! Sorry.

He was a lot more nervous at the beginning of his career, but since he's took over the Evening News he has become a very good newsreader - authoritive, yet far more watchable than Trevor McDonald IMO.
He made his mark really with his on-location presenting on the Evening News - especially the six weeks or so in Iraq, and also the one offs when big stories occur in the UK. That's one reason why many suggest he'd be better staying at the Evening News.
Saying that, as newsreaders don't like five-day weeks, I don't see why rather than having fixed hosts, we have a team of hosts, with one doubling up the Lunchtime and Evening News and the other doing the Evening News and 10.30pm bulletin.
