BBC director general Mark Thompson announces departure

Mark Thompson Mark Thompson will leave after coverage of the Olympics and the Queen's Jubilee are complete

The BBC's director general, Mark Thompson, has told staff he will leave the corporation this autumn.

With nearly eight years in the job, he has been the BBC's longest-serving director general since the 1970s.

His tenure has seen the BBC suffer scandals including the Sachsgate affair and a series of budget cuts and staff redundancies.

But he has also presided over successes including Strictly Come Dancing and The Frozen Planet.

Mr Thompson was appointed in May 2004. He took over in the wake of Greg Dyke's resignation, following criticism of the BBC in Lord Hutton's report on the death of the government weapons inspector Dr David Kell

Ofcom's Ed Rochards is an applicant ....

Ed Richards and the BBC Director General post
May 28, 2012
Given the significant level of speculation surrounding potential applicants for the BBC Director General role, Ofcom can confirm that CEO Ed Richards has applied. Robust procedures, agreed by the Ofcom Chairman and the Board, have been put in place to prevent any potential conflict of interest.
Ed has already stepped aside from all discussions and communication at all levels on matters where the BBC may have an interest. This includes Board meetings, executive meetings and policy discussions, both formal and informal.

Surely if Ed Richards cannot deal with BBC matters in his job until the new DG is announced it is pretty pointless for him to continue with it.
