Interesting debate there, have to say the 2 young guests had much better arguments.

The whole event is opening up into a number of different debates now, whether it be police vs community, job opportunities, cuts etc.

Very interesting, and no real noise from the streets of London tonight.

Taking it back to newsgathering and the last few nights kind of show how reliant news organisations have become on the public providing footage and images of such events. With it being unwise to plead for footage they've kind of been lost without it.

There is an Official Media Blackout! I have had official confirmation from 2 sources, both at BBC and at Sky. It is an UTTER DISGRACE that the majority of us is not being told of the real picture. I have friends in various parts of London who are absolutely distraught at what's going on...

Manchester is a mere 'diversion' as to what's taking place country wide.

I am absolutely appalled at this 'starvation' of news.... These 'mindless' 'child' like thugs DO NOT watch the news networks for logistics or excitement as to where the riots are happening.... An D / DA Notice is not valid here!

If that's the case, then good! I'm all for democracy and free speech, but national security MUST come first. You can't have nationwide disorder going on and on like this. The traditional media - and more so social media - are merely spreading fear and rumours, which is undoubtedly adding fuel to the fire. Go back to the 80s when people only had landlines and short news bulletins and it was easier to get things under control. I've heard comments from people on BBC News and Sky News tonight saying that the media, mobile phones and social media have helped the rioters stay one step ahead of the police. That's not on - law and order comes first. If that means keeping things from the public until the police have control and the worst of it is over, then so be it. We've been far too soft on these criminals for too long - with freedom comes responsibility and in my view if a person is deliberately out causing criminal damage and assaulting police then they should expect to face the consequences.

What 'starvation'? Please enlighten us as to all the things we're not hearing about then, a few more details about this 'offical confirmation' of a blackout. Perhaps some details about where there is trouble in London would be useful.

Rolling Eyes

And don't even think about saying theres information on Twitter. Theres been rumours on Twitter all day about where I live being 'targetted' tonight. Claims of shops being smashed or burnt down circulating from mid afternoon onwards. All false. A few yobs turned up this evening, damaged a few cars and were promptly arrested.

Doubtful. Reports from both corps suggesting trouble in Milton Keynes, the Midlands, Nottingham and now even Luton. Things certainly appear to have calmed down in most parts of the UK, with only minor hotspots - all of which are being controlled by police.

I seriously doubt that an official media blackout -- which would be a disgrace for any democratic country -- is currently in effect.

Look beyond the technical issues, and Sangat TV offers a taste of what local television stations could offer - voices to communities the mainstream may not necessarily provide.

The response on Twitter and the fact Sangat's website has crashed proves these miniscule platforms can be as effective, if not more, than the big guns.

"Order without liberty and liberty without order are equally destructive."
- Theodore Roosevelt

We can argue all night about the merits of liberty versus safety, however, all I was trying to say is that withholding some information from the public in order to allow the police to get control of these criminals might not be such a bad thing. It is clear that the media - especially rolling news and social media - are ending up helping the rioters by giving a minute-by-minute account of where the violence is/isn't, giving away police tactics etc. These are exceptional circumstances and sometimes such events call for exceptional actions. It's no different to the Obama administration withholding details of the mission to kill Osama bin Laden until the action was complete. Sometimes it is necessary to withhold a certain amount of information from the public in order to protect them. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that the news shouldn't be reported, but I do think there should be a delay between events happening and them making it to air. At least enough time to help the police gain the upper hand.

Special titles on London Tonight - images of the riots inserted in place of the usual location shots in the titles. Looked pretty seamless which makes me wonder whether the titles are designed to have that done more often, they do look pretty basic compared to the old greeny/grey titles? First time I've seen it done anyway.

I guess though the regional titles are just a template retooled for each region, so shouldn't be too difficult to update images - it's whether the regions can do it themselves or whether it has to go back to the initial creators to do.

Any news yet on planned coverage of parliament on Thursday - I assume BBC2 will do something.

They are, but only on Final Cut Pro, which not all regions have. And not all regions were sent the template either. Some regions have changed their titles since 2008 (BBC South for example), most haven't.

I think Brekkie and Buster were talking about ITV regions rather then BBC regions?
