I feel the vitriol Maitlis is receiving is unjust and unwarranted. Look at the panel for heaven's sake. The only shred of decency on it was Rory Stewart and I'm no Tory. She battled against a gaggle of renowned Tory dodgers and as for the way Boris Johnson treated her, no wonder she felt the need to interrupt!

Let's also not forget she was THE ONLY WOMAN on the show amongst some really sexist and bigoted men.

I'm with all the other broadcasters who are standing to her defence.

I truly despair of identity politics. She was the only woman because the remaining candidates were male. There had been two female candidates who have been knocked out of the process to replace our current prime minister - who is female. In the previous leadership competition, the last two candidates standing were both women. I'm not a Tory - I'm more likely to spoil the ballot paper - but the Tories do far better at getting female leaders than any other party.

I also detest the way that people bandy around words like "bigot", "sexist", "racist", etc to try to shut down debate because, in the end, all it does is drive debates that need to be had underground and then, ta-da, President Trump gets elected!

Public discourse in this country has really gone downhill in recent years. Your post was, unfortunately, an example of this decline.

Getting back to the program, I am a long-standing fan of Emily but neither she nor the politicans did well last night. The format was bad, the chairs the politicians sat on looked very uncomfortable, Emily seemed more interested in grandstanding herself, and an hour wasn't long enough for five contributors.

The BBC have made some significant errors here, and it's going to have lasting effects for their political programming.

It's going to take some rowing back for the BBC to come close to saving this one.

I can't see them hosting anymore debates or public answering sessions during the leadership contest and even the next general election might see them being unable to get agreement with all qualifying parties.

You've seen many things. Very few of them come to happen.

Indeed, I'm inclined to agree. Certainly will give fresh impetus to ITV/ITN to get in on the act now.

The BBC don't seem to be able to say his comments were racist.

Do they have to? Can they not just drily report the facts?

I think we've long since worked out you have an anti-BBC agenda and it's a bit tiresome.

I am not Anti BBC.

Maybe, but from your posts you’re happy to take any situation and be the most pessimistic, most dramatic, take to the most extreme or unrealistic end and you’re particularly keen to do that when it involves the BBC.

You are entitled to your opinion as am I. I disagree. Let's move on.

Storm in a tea cup which 99% of the public couldn't care less about but the Conservative media are using as a distraction technique once again to deflect criticism from themselves.

Frankly considering we seem to be in an era of extremist politics it's quite appropriate people who've made extreme and racists views are allowed to ask questions. After all they're allowed to answer them.

How many times has the BBC been shut down the past week according to BM11?
