The set was lovely, but the conduct of the debate was awful Half the time they were just squabbling. Furthermore, does that bloke Rory have piles? He seems incapable of sitting on a simple bar stool. Shocked

The whole thing was a hour of my life I’ll never get back

And the Oxford camera 🤮

I take it the vast majority of links were in SD?

If so I wonder why they couldn’t set up a ENG camera (as it’s a locked off shot and a prompter wouldn’t be necessary) and a Dirac encoder over the circuit and away you go. Unless of course the backgrounds were chromakeyed then there would be some issues as I assume they would have been done locally.

I'm told DIRAC is no longer used for contributions from the regions, they all have uncompressed HD-SDI circuits now. Goodness knows what was going on with Oxford, because the background was HD, but the camera was SD, (and very poor too). Presumably the backgrounds were keyed in locally, though possibly not ?

I’d imagine they’d be keyed locally. I doubt the vision mixer used had enough keyers to handle all the OS at the same time.

The reason I’m not sure is that Oxford probably doesn’t have an HD mixer, or perhaps they ( and the other SD regions) have some sort of rudimentary HD keyer ?

I feel the vitriol Maitlis is receiving is unjust and unwarranted. Look at the panel for heaven's sake. The only shred of decency on it was Rory Stewart and I'm no Tory. She battled against a gaggle of renowned Tory dodgers and as for the way Boris Johnson treated her, no wonder she felt the need to interrupt!

Let's also not forget she was THE ONLY WOMAN on the show amongst some really sexist and bigoted men.

I'm with all the other broadcasters who are standing to her defence.

The problem last night was the format. You can't have multiple questions from the public to five different people with a response open to each questioner, along with interruptions and questions from the chair, as well as giving the candidates a chance to cross-examine, expecting it all to fit into an hour with no overruns and expect a good balance and decent debate.

Perhaps they were expecting 3 or 4 candidates instead of the full 5 - even then the format was wrong.

The programme asked regions where possible to use their main studios and not their newsroom cameras. Had Oxford used their newsroom camera it could have been offered via Dirac in HD. (I wasn’t actually aware Dirac has been discontinued from the regions - it may explain why a lot of recent newsroom camera guests have been asked for in SD). As it stood though, we offered the main studio and keyed it locally. All of it was SD, the backing supplied by network and played out from clarity, keyed via the vision mixer and via one of our Thomson 1707s. The cso cloth has not been used since the demise of the 8pm bulletin and some lamps have been repurposed. It was, given the very tight timescale of knowing about the contribution to this programme, as good as I could get it.

So you can't blame the BBC for this then because he concealed all of that while they were doing background checks on him. But Guido Fawkes, the Daily Mail and others with an agenda will still use it as a rock to beat them with.

Guido Fawkes.... oh dear.

If he said the sky was blue I'd have to stick my head out of the window to check.

I think we've long since worked out you have an anti-BBC agenda and it's a bit tiresome.
