To be honest, it can't be breaking news all evening. By definition it's only breaking news when it breaks!

It's what Sky News are known for - as an example, Charles Kennedy resigned at 3:15 yesterday, yet apparently it was still "Breaking News" at half past seven!

Or when the Pope died, that was up for a LONG time.

Same with George Best, he died at Lunchtime but Sky News still had it as Breaking News as late as 9/10pm.

Just a thought... what if they use the expression 'breaking news' as if it meant 'continuing coverage' or 'developing story'?
In this sense breaking news mean that they break into their regular programming and cover an event of huge significance. If it is really important then it means that normal schedules are dropped as long as there are new developments.

But as far as I remember (I don't have CNNi now) CNNi is the only channel which differentiate between 'breaking news' and 'developing story', even in their on-sreen graphics. Correct me if i'm wrong.

A very valid point, and one which I didn't consider, but you may well be correct.

Yes, but I guess it is there because it is assumed that the vast majority of their viewers will be tuning in after the story has broke, and if it is a big event, to those who turn on their tellys when they get in from work (like me getting in last night and seeing a big strap regarding Kennedy), it is breaking news to an extent.

Well, that's my theory anyway.

On those grounds, it could go on for days.
