Good lord! 23 pages on this??????
Nothing has happened. Nobody has died. There is no embargo. It's a big coincidence.
If something does break overnight, there's been no embargo on it.
I'll say again - nothing has happened.
And one bit of "evidence" mentioned way earlier - a very very reliable source told me Jon Sopel had pre-arranged to leave early today for a personal engagement.... nothing more than that.

This thread is quite comic! Nobody has died. There is no cover-up. It's a coincidence - maybe the heavy overcast weather in London today depressed people setting off for work and they all put on dark colours.....
Of course, past performance is no indicator of future...... but embargoes of the nature being alluded to here are usually less than half an hour, if they exist at all. Embargos break - the bigger the story, the more likely it is to happen. If - and I stress IF, nothing's actually happened! - the Queen had died and all the newsrooms knew at 1700, it would have leaked onto the web and be going round like wildfire by 1800.
The people I can think of off the top of my head who'd get all the anchors wearing black are the Queen, maybe the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince William and possibly Mandela.
If someone major does die overnight, then my credibility is gone! But there's NOTHING unusual going on tonight at all.

Do you not think Tony Blair *might* just get a black tie, seeing as he's our elected leader ... just maybe.
I have to agree this thread is utter comedy. Talk about a serious case of newbies getting their knickers in a twist and trying to make themselves look good! Amazing.

Great to see this forum thriving once again!
It is strange - the only thing no one has mentioned is it could just be out of respect for the Bali bombings, though I honestly don't think so.
However, if it's an embargo wouldn't there be an agreed time already, so there would be no need for newsreaders before this time to be in black?
Also, surely sports presenters are irrelevant as in the event of a major story, sport is usually dropped!
I guess midnight is the next time the embargo could be lifted, but if nothing happens then I can't see it be anything - I doubt embargos would be too long!
The last one I remember is the Queen Mother's. BBC2 cut off air and had a still frame for ages, and I think it was C4 who actually broke the news within their scheduled bulletin.

Oooops, forgot him! Maybe.
If all the BBC's anchors did wear black after Blair died, the Mail would be screaming about paying Blair the kind of tribute the BBC denied the much-loved Queen Mother, If they didn't wear black, the Mail would be screaming about the shocking lack of respect shown by the BBC.......!
