Well TOny Benn was admited to hospital during the Labour conference, but never heard any more about it, so I assume he recovered.

Yes, he was given a pacemaker

Of course it could be the Pope.... oh, no hang on a sec....

Ah, but remember Pope John Paul I - he didn't last long, did he? So, you never know... Pope Whatsit is getting on a bit himself, after all.

He's just been elected! Anyway he's holding Conclave as we speak. This is not Vatican city related.

That didn't stop JP I dying very shortly after he was elected, did it! I was only kidding, anyway Smile

Well you may be right, but a news blackout could last hours if there is one in place. Its probably too soon to say for certain. And if it is nothing, then it was indeed an odd coincidence.

By the way, are any of our forum members from the media able to state if there is "something" going on? I realise that they can't elaborate, but would hinting that there is or isn't anything going on, go against the hypothetical court order that could be in place?

Certainly I would have expected one of them to come online and say if there was NOTHING going on.

You know it's really not that complicated. When you are told to "say nothing", you say nothing.

Now if you draw from that that *something* must be happening then sit back and watch your television.

If someone was about to die, it's quite likely that we would have been told about their ill-health or entry to hospital.

It doesn't rule out a sudden illness or accident though - and it could potentially take many hours to inform all close relations, especially if they were out of the country, etc.

Which would account for a 'rolling' embargo - with presenters over many hours dressed suitably in case the embargo was lifted during their shift.

On the other hand, as other have said, 10pm could well be a logical time if anything is to be announced tonight. The early editions of the papers will be more or less out, and it hits the late bulletins of all channels.

Obviously not the same as what's potentially happening tonight, but remember this time last year, Blair's 'double bombshell' about his heart condition and not seeking a fourth term was embargoed until 10.

I take it you think this is all one lucky coincidence then?

Exactly my point. They must have been told to say nothing, or they would probably have told us we were all wrong, and everyting is fine.

Exactly - so if it takes hours, why is everyone sitting in black? - IT'S A COINCIDENCE!!!

Will everyone please disappear from here - it's clogging the forum up!!!

Sorry, Forgot it was your forum.

And no, it is standard procedure, before a big sombre story for the presenters to be dressed in black WAITING for permission to break silence.

Let's take a step back for a moment:

Is it the anniversary of anyone's death, e.g. Jill Dando?

As rightly pointed out earlier, there are limitations to who it can be in terms of royalty, as I agree the Charles / Camilla feature on N24 earlier would have been done in very bad taste if a royal had died.

I agree it's clear something has happened / will happen, it's just a matter of time.
