I can see what they're
trying
to do; but the writing's not quite tight enough for them to pull it off. Any idea who's behind the script?
The theatre of news is verging on vomit-inducing; maybe that's the point, but I'd have preferred something that was entirely over the top that was easy to look at...

Well, the pilot for The Day Today (which is on the DVD) was pretty slow in places, and was developed into a fantastic series; that said it wasn't subjected to an unwitting public, whereas they've decided that this should be.

Well it's a pilot isn't it. So we don't think there will be a series then?

Well at least people can't launch into another ITV rant blaming Charles Allen for making such a poor show or someother similar nonsense, it was made by an indie.
The commissioners decided to give it a chance, but at the same time buried it in a graveyard slot, so late it actually was on after Celebrity Love Island, so it it was poor, hardly anybody will have seen it!

Yes some pilots are in-house and never make it to air, and this should have been one of them.
Awful.
Awful.

That's what confused me. I thought it was the real ITV News.

There is no flow to this at all. Not only does it sound scripted, but it sounds unrehearsed and poorly scripted.

Awful? Well I wouldn't go that far.
The people on the show have potential and with some decent scripts, cut it down to 30 minutes and they might have something half decent on their hands.
I feel there should have been a greater look at the current days/weeks newspapers and more jokes made about them! There is an obvious one about finding out where Saddam has hidden his weapons of mass destruction after all this time etc....
Personally, I liked the combination of Tonight with Trevor Mcdonald and ITV News studios and theme music. I also liked the breaking news spoof but felt it was dragged out just a little bit too long.
The Look Welsh segment with Barry Welsh was poor. Having seen Barry Welsh on HTV, and after John Sparkes winning numerous Bafta awards for his shows, I feel his segment could(and shouldve) been better. Even one of his joke about the catalogue of errors was lifted from an old Barry Welsh episode!
Obviously this programme was trying to fill some gap between Have I Got News For You and The Day Today and people will obviously compare it with those two programmes.
If this is just a pilot then a lot of work will be needed to produce a programme that will work in a primetime slot.
I think it's rescueable!
