Why is that American?
I notice it as a US practice to announce the name of the presenter in that way both at the start and end of a news programme/documentary. It may have been adopted in other English-speaking nations.
It hasn't been adopted here until now, as far as I know. I hope the BBC don't do it (other than for Panorama, where it is his trademark intro...) I don't believe that it's repeated with Vine's name on a strap, although he may be credited as presenter at the end.
Well I read ( can't remeber the source - bit IIRC it was a reliable one) one of the reasons Julie got the job is because in a poll taken, she was the least well known. So she was not being paid any more for presenting Tonight as the job was being seen as a career boost. So for a couple of weeks they might use the introduction , just to make it clear who she is.
