'Voice' of Edinburgh Military Tattoo dies aged 82

The TV voice of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Tom Fleming, has died in an Edinburgh hospice at the age of 82.

However, he missed his 45th tattoo last year as he had to attend a hospital appointment. Mr Fleming also commentated on Royal and state events.

In my view, Tom Flemming was the BBC's #1 voice for state occasions, and, of course, the tattoo. His voice was so rich, the diction perfect and he was from the old guard who knew you did not have to fill every second with words. I hope that the BBC will honour him with a tribute programme.

I doubt if he could be bettered - Eric Robson seemed at one stage to be his protégé, until Huw Edwards came along. IMO, David Dimbleby could touch Tom's mastery of his trade.
