The Times’ Radio Station after “BBC News Stars”

I'll be surprised Talk Radio will still be on air in a year's time.
The move to DAB+ with its limited audience is a soft kill.

Is DAB+ really that much of an issue? Lots of stations have changed over in the last year or so and it doesn't seem to have made that much or a stir. Also online/smart speakers will provide a lot of the listening.

That said Talk was at a disadvantage at the start being on SDL, the coverage wasn't great, I don't think it's as good as D1 now

D1 have far more transmitters, but of course it's diminishing returns as you add each new site. One advantage of DAB+ encoded stations is the signal is more robust (all else being equal) than vanilla DAB, and counter intuitivly that's true for the two formats on the same mux. DAB+ also decays in a more ordered fashion at the threshold of reception.

SDL have also used higher power than the BBC and D1 at the key major sites, which also helps.

I'm not convinced the penitration of DAB+ receivers is as low as folk imagine. I was surprised to recently discover my mother's Denon mini HiFi from 2010, has DAB+, it has no branding on it to suggest so.

I forgot all about this until I saw an article on Sky News TODAY referring to the PM's interview on the station. It's amazing how fast something new can seem like its always been there. I suspect this station will do well, BUT its a bit annoying that it isn't on normal FM radio or Freeview. I suspect lots of people that will be the type they want to go after to listen will only have these as an options. But the future is now!

To add about Talk Radio, I have only listened a few times but it never took me in, and some of the people they have on there seem a bit off the the wall in an Alex Jones way. They are not as bad, but there is a similar sensationalism about some of them in the way they say things. And I am pretty right wing!

I wonder how long it'll be before the great Alastair Stewart gets a slot?

He's done radio before (a brief stint at 5 Live when it launched).

Would seem a natural home for him.

A very assured start this morning. Times Radio obviously did well to get an interview with Boris Johnson for its first day, but he was given a much easier time than he would if appeared on Today and they failed to land a hard story from it.

One test for the station will be when there's a major international story and whether they'll be able to tap the resources the BBC has.

I also tried a couple of times to listen via Google Home. When I asked for Times Radio, it started playing Radio X.

I notice from video clips they’ve posted on twitter that they haven’t managed to get the screen behind the primary presenter seat so that it displays or scrolls smoothly on camera - the rolling text in particular rather flickers. Comparatively, the display behind the second position (Stig Abel’s, this morning) seems fine - albeit with quite a bit of glare and reflection from outside the studio.

Listening on Radioplayer, there’s also a rather unfortunate feedback-like high frequency noise audible from the studio microphones (but not when they play recorded trails/promos).

Edit: I also think the breakfast guest shot is a little unfortunately framed - rather little of the screen behind them is visible, unlike the black studio door:

And also a shame they haven’t got a system where the camera switches between guest and presenter in an interview, which LBC or Five Live manage (though I’m unsure if that’s manual or automatic). Radio is increasingly becoming a visual medium (hence the fancy studios), but a 2 or 3 minute clip where it’s locked on a single shot, with the interviewers’ voices heard offscreen, makes for less pleasant viewing.

Despite his obvious talent, I think the optics of how he left ITV and the comment he made online- regardless of the context he made it in- probably mean he’s in career quarantine for a lot longer, if not indefinitely.

Just been listening to Matt Chorley interviewing George Osborne and Alistair Darling, and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I'm going to give it a bit more time before making a full judgement, but I could see this working out well.

He's a semi-regular fill-in on TalkRadio.

Assume the poor coverage of SDL is the reason TalkRadio, TalkSport (Scotland variant), TalkSport 2 and Virgin Radio are on the Aberdeen local multiplex. http://www.wohnort.org/dab/ukloc.html#Aberdeen
