I was watching CNN the other night, and the on duty anchor was Fiounnala Sweeney.
Sitting behind her in the newsroom, hammering away on a computer keyboard, was fellow anchor, Becky Anderson, who did not appear on screen at all that night.
So, my guess is that off-duty newscasters are assigned office duties / production duties / something......

I think Steve Scott is one of ITV News' best anchors/reporters at the moment, I think he should replace Sir Trev when he retires. Steve Scott seems to have a certain authority about him, whereas Mark Austin just appears on screen to me as dull - just 'reading off an autocue with little or no emotion', to put it like that.

Yes. To tell the truth he is not that good at it. David Jessel complains that he scrolls to fast. Nik always complains that the scrolling wheel is too small, that he can't see his monitor. and that he can't hear the director. Anita Macnaught usually does it in the week now that she no longer appears on screen. She seams to manage OK.
It's quite a common practice. I guess presenters are best trained to know how autoque should be done. Matthew often does the weekends on News24 and Huw Edwards would be furious if anyone else did Fiona Bruce's autoque on a Friday. He is so possessive about it.
