Surely Sky's hysterical reporting of rumour and exaggeration of the facts gives weight to the BBC's decision to delay Breaking News until they have ascertained all available facts...even if that means they are a bit slower than their competitors. After all, a rolling news channel should report just that - news and not rumour / fantasy
Possibly a first for BBC Three News - Paddy O'Connell is presenting from on location at Warren Street, with Sevi in the studio.
Nope not a first. Paddy presented both 7th July and 8th July on location from Central London near the site of one of the tube or bus bombs.
In the past BBC Three News (either The News Show or The Seven O'Clock News) has been co-presented from outside the studio a number of times. Eddie Mair presented from party conferences, and Ben McCarthy presented live from Westminster on a number of occasions. Manoush Zomorodi, the BBC Three New York reporter, co-presented the show from New York in the week of the US presidential elections.
I stand corrected. (And I even watched some of the party conference ones too). Silly me.
Actually, let's be clear about this: Sky was the real champion of the alleged shooting of a suicide bomber at Canary Wharf; they picked that one up and ran with it. ITV News very uncertainly mentioned it once or twice, but were very quick to retract that when it became clear that it was pure boIIocks. Having stuck with the coverage on N24 for most of that afternoon, I don't recall hearing any mention of that until
after
it had been confirmed at one of the police news conferences that it was false, and even then it was as a reference to the earlier incorrect speculations that had been flying about during the day - including the reports of more bombs that the BBC also reported throughout that day. .
Sorry, that is absolute tosh.
I didn't see anything of the initial coverage yesterday, owing to fact that I was 40,000ft above ground for most of the time, but I watched from about 9am-the late afternoon on the 7th July.
Sky didn't run with the shooting at Canary Wharf; it was mentioned, and it was mentioned on the BBC, but it was dismissed pretty quickly and I very strongly recall the presenters saying just how much caution they were treating the report with given how confusing the situation was, and how it was not confirmed.
The idea that they got a whiff of the story, then went all out on it, is twaddle.
You talk about Capital Radio being loose with the facts...
I thought ITV's coverage was the best yesterday. Nick and Nina presented well with an air of calm which was not present on Sky. Plus I think they got the balance right between reporting some rumours, but not all and emphazing that the were unconfirmed.
Someone phoned in saying how their tube had been evacuated and shots fired, and this was about 10.10, I guess. Then about half an hour later Martin Brunt comes on the phone saying that a suspected bomber has been shot, and a few minutes later ITV and the Beeb quote ''report'' (which presumably means Sky).
What is strange is that the initial call from the person who phoned in to Sky was dismissed and not really followed up on, but then half an hour later all the networks are going mad for it.
I wonder why Sky still can't use the TfL cameras. Does anyone know if there are any restrictions on Sky using it, or if they have to pay for it?
He's just done the same thing with another eyewitness, who responded: "He's dead. Seriously dead." I know you need to check these things, but come on...
Incidentally, for all Sky have been slagged off here, they were right with their reports of the shooting, and 10 or 15 minutes ahead of everyone else. There are dangers in just repeating the line the police give you, especially in that there are no doubt things they don't want to tell you.
The woman who phoned into Sky must've phoned in right after the shooting, but for whatever reason they didn't put it up as a newsflash, seemed to have waited until Martin Brunt phoned in. Either way, like you said, they were still a good ten minutes ahead of everyone else.
He has put them well ahead of the other networks since the first wave of bombings two weeks ago. Seems he has some very good sources at the Met who are happy to feed him information. The news that he had been killed was on Sky about 10 minutes before anyone else.
They seem to be replaying the woman they spoke to earlier in the day, and whilst ITV are asking whether these are plain clothed officers, Sky have already confirmed that they are.
I notice Nick Tosspot on five was calling them "Homocide bombers" "because i don't agree with the term sucicide bombers". Clearly the prat has been force fed too much fox than even he can handle

Nick who? I'm at work during the day so I don't get to see it.

This "homicide bomber" term seems similar to those who object to the terms "joyriding" and "happy slapping" because obviously there is no happiness or joy for the victims. However these terms describe the motivation of the perpatrator, i.e kicks, and have largely stuck. I doubt homicide bomber will catch on as has been pointed out already, all bombs with the intent to kill are homicide bombs, and most people wouldnt have a clue what you were on about.
