I'd have thought international viewers watching a UK-based news channel would definitely be interested in knowing who the new Chancellor, Foreign Secretary, and Secretary for Leaving the EU are.

Though an international news channel wouldn't normally use any of those terms in their coverage.

Chancellor is normally 'finance minister' and Secretary is an odd British term for minister (there's Secretary of State in the US but that's different). Which is a good reason not to merge news channels

Chancellor seems to be a term in the US that is more associated with persons that head a University.

I think Sky were next to the BBC yesterday as Adam Boulton could be heard pretty clearly in the background when they went to Vicki Young and later when Huw Edwards presented the 10 from the same slot.

Some suggestions that Damian Green is to take over from Whittingdale at CMS which would put the BBC Charter Renewal process way up in the air. Getting a former broadcaster in the role would be great, knowing the issues and complexities.

Wittingdale departure confirmed

Yes, and that's a role in most universities here too.

The issue is more when you compare the phrases 'Chancellor Angela Merkel' and 'Chancellor George Osbourne' - they're two very different jobs

Actually, in the US, the Cabinet members who head Government departments are referred to as 'Secretary name ', and their post as 'Secretary of X'.

Most of ours are 'Secretary of State for X', whereas in the US the Secretary of State heads the State Department, which is the equivalent of our Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

However, as you correctly point out, many other countries (even Commonwealth countries such as Australia and Canada) use the term Minister.

Every day is a 'School Day' on TVF. Very Happy
